How many times do you see a great thread get trashed or hijacked for various reasons and I'll take the "Stand" and say I'm the worst for doing that..  So when I'm acting stupid tell me to trash it here, get it?? Rants - Cheers - Pet Peeves - or your Aunt Lilly, bring it..  (More then likely the dumbest thread anybody started, but I tried to keep it stupid, stupid) - The Forum Moderators rules still apply, no obscene pics, raunchy language and personal attacks, those will be reported and deleted if not changed...

(edited 9/13/2017 - Added link Request for Forum Etiquette - Added another link 9/21/2017 Forum filtering )

To Quote the Great Rick Becker.....

"When a perfectly valid and good question is asked, the thread gets a lot of great answers and some more questions. Once the questions has been answered to each persons (this includes you and me) satisfaction, we no longer need or want the discussion to continue.
We get the emails notifying us that another (and another and another and another...) post has been made and we get frustrated with the time wasting and we get snarky.

The other thing that seems to happen all too often is a post gets hijacked. The discussion moves off of the initial topic (ONE and TWO...) into many sub topics. Sometimes this happens and the initial question hasn't been totally answered."

Another Great Quote from Dennis Dohogne

"Hey, SWX guys and gals, what if we used THIS post for some of our more fun or tangential comments so we keep the other posts with more serious discussions from getting distracted/off-topic (polluted)?"

How about this from BMX'rerer Todd Blacksher

- In an effort to keep the posts somewhat on topic, and make it easy to pick out the "good information," a couple of us thought it would be a good idea to put in a water cooler. Are you completely confused? It's simple, if there is a thread where we are all helping someone find a solution, and it makes you think of something semi-related, you can say "Head over to "The Kitty Dump"

We need a good quote from Kelef Man to get it started.....

Garage is preferable to all other means. Rick Becker, you must mean the blue tarp cover that a guy near me covers his BMW 318i with on the side of the garage every winter! He keeps the daily driver on the side of the garage all summer. Slightly backwards. This year my Mustang gets to sleep in my Father-in-law's garage bay as they're down to one car, which means I get my garage back after 5 years of winters leaving the daily driver outside!

That actually sounded to me like some college kids who think they have the "Next Great Thing" and are just looking for somebody to tell them how to make it work (for free). Because, beer money.

Having said that, if somebody could make something like a magnetic lens, that could be very useful.

Hmm... I think that might work for my giant nucleonic ray device...

While I do like French Maids I don't remember them populating any of the 12 days of Christmas.

12 drummers drumming and 11 Pipers piping make way too much noise. We don't need those.

For me personally I don't need the 10 Lords a leaping... not that there's anything wrong with that!

The 9 ladies dancing definitely sounds like something I'd be interested in!

We could keep the 8 maids a milking, sell the milk and they could support the rest of us!

Elmar Klammer - you wrote this in the New FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) Space in the Forums

Hi Jim,

I think it would help if SW would add a post about etiquette and proper form. Since common courtesy is not hereditary I would suggest that SW shows initiative. I am talking about a basic form. Something like a Greeting addressed to person being addressed and Thank you at the end following the Name of person posting. With some sort of help for users to understand that language matters and that proper form has a purpose. I would think this can be done without rolling out a rule book. But maybe it could be implemented into the discussion template. Everyone appreciates a hello and a thank you. Whether it is manually typed or auto-populated. The outcome is the same.

I hope SW can embrace this idea.

Thanks,

Elmar

*******

Totally in agreement - All good and proper and I used to do that on a regular basis, but somehow this got swept under the rug.  Since the introduction of Phone Texting, keep it simple, (it got Stupid) and short and don't care about the spelling era, I am getting emails and or faxes from large companies where there is no greeting other then either Hi or John and the end is the persons name if your lucky.  I worked as a Sales/Designer for quite a few years and I would have gotten fired if I wouldn't have acknowledged the person with Good Morning or Good Afternoon and then ending was always Sincerely......  How many people write like that today, very little.....

Hope this helps.

By time you type all of that someone has swooped in and given a short sweet correct answer to the problem that was what you intended to say the whole time.

p.s.

John thanks for the help with the parts that are turning into art.

I should be getting to work, but a reply in the Discussion about what we listen to work reminded me of a story so I thought I'd tell it here.

When my son, who will be 28 in a few weeks, was in school he was assigned a science project.  He chose to do something with an electric guitar.  I don't remember the details, but anyway his notebook that they had to prepare as part of the project had four pictures of guitar players on the cover.  After the independent judges had reviewed their projects he told me one of them called him aside, pointed to his notebook, and asked "Do you know who those people are, or are they just random pictures you downloaded?"  My son pointed to them without hesitating and said "Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page".  He said the judge's reply was "You should get an A just for knowing that."

My wife called me yesterday - she was at the house were building about 30 miles east of Dallas.

She said the digital thermometer bottomed out the night before at 8 degrees F.  Also an outside pipe was leaking - but the valve was off inside so it wasn't under much pressure - I know what I will be fixing this weekend.  Got my electric bill last night from that property - over $500 - ouch.  The local news station said that that night was the lowest temp we have had in over 20 years (and that was in Dallas (13 degrees)).  And we couldn't even make any snow men because we only got a trace of Sleet at our places.

Re: The "Kitty Dump" - Watercooler - Trash it Here - Toxoplasmosispus Outbreak At The Dump - Too Much Kitty

Rick McDonald I always do that with kitchen faucet if it's below 0°f, it's on an outside wall. Learned that it does freeze when its -15°F, luckily, it didn't burst. A slow drip is all you need, I also keep cabinet doors open to allow warm air in there.

Re: The "Kitty Dump" - Watercooler - Trash it Here - Toxoplasmosispus Outbreak At The Dump - Too Much Kitty

ouch... frozen pipes....it has been cold here too but not sure we got down to 8.....I managed to find some sticky snow/ice in the 24 deg temps yesterday.

Re: The "Kitty Dump" - Watercooler - Trash it Here - Toxoplasmosispus Outbreak At The Dump - Too Much Kitty

This is an outside faucet that is on a pipe that comes up from the ground. I had turned off the gate valve that feeds that line a couple weeks ago and bleed the pressure off the line but it is a long line (underground going to a few faucets) and this one was at the low end, so I couldn't get all the water out (just the pressure). It was supposed to be a temporary faucet but it's been there a few years. Either the gate valve has a slow leak that lets the pressure back into the pipe or I didn't shut it off tight enough or it was just the residual water that was in the line. Easy to fix but have to get a new faucet - just another headache.  Probably have a few others in the property and found a few years ago that the brass at a threaded junction on ball valves is really thin and the brass faucet itself usually splits open if even a small amount of water is trapped.

At least it isn't spewing water or flooding anything.

Inside the house we have all the faucets with home runs to a central manifold so we can shut off individual lines as needed and all the pipes and faucets are super insulated to the outside so no problems inside.

On my house IN Dallas, I let the water drip the other night because it's pear and beam and not as well insulated.

Re: The "Kitty Dump" - Watercooler - Trash it Here - Toxoplasmosispus Outbreak At The Dump - Too Much Kitty

I'm sure you're ok.. but it reminded me of years ago.. I was away on contract for 4 days,.. and the temp was going below 0F.. I let the outside faucet drip.. and had the house heater @ ~40F...  I called my landlord and told him I will be back in another 2 days  (6 days total)...  he went down to the cabin and the outside drip was barely dripping,. but called back and said the pipes had frozen.. and the furnace had shut down,..   then, found a area where the insulation in the crawlspace, near the access door, had fallen off  (we later determined it had been a bear which tried to get in and tore some insulation back during summer).. we placed a 75 watt hanging light just below the pipe and it took ~12hrs to thaw.

Next time steal your wives hair drier.  Works great not too hot and but much better than a bulb.  I keep a hair drier around to heat the fabric on model Airplanes to smooth the fabric.

lol.... I did not have a wife back then and I've never owned a hair dryer.

(btw, my dad (and I)  worked for RayChem/Tyco.. .i.e., shrink tubing... and we did have a few heat guns.. so, agree with Francisco on the variable temp benefits)

Now it just to get the wrinkles out.  Have  no built a new one in a long while.   But I'm sure if I hunted around I would find the one I had that the temp could be adjusted.  Those also run Hotter so if you have plastic lines I would watch out you could melt them.

PS  Retired Marine here so the hair dyer for sure is not for me.

Re: The "Kitty Dump" - Watercooler - Trash it Here - Toxoplasmosispus Outbreak At The Dump - Too Much Kitty

Fortunately no bears here.

I have done the light bulb trick several times myself when I was in the North East.

That reminded me of when I was living in Houston in the early 80's and we had a hard freeze (and not many older houses there were insulated at all).  There were some guys that were not used to dealing with frozen pipes and they decided it would be a good idea to light newspaper on fire and drop in in the wall around the frozen pipe (from the attic space) to warm the pipe.

I'm sure you have already guessed the outcome.  They got quite a scolding from the Fire Marshal and the landlord had to be held back by the police so he wouldn't go after the guys.

Some people just don't think things through

Edit: fixed my spelling

What a pain in the neck! The only way I saved my in-ground sprinklers was with check-valve drains, and I blew them out with compressed air every fall.

The "Kitty Dump" - Watercooler - Trash it Here - SWW TOP TEN IDEAS - Don't Forget to VOTE
