Additive Manufacturing or 3D Printing has had a huge amount of hype in the last few years and in many cases has not lived up to expectation. This is because it is not a miracle manufacturing method for making anything and everything, but a different way of making things that has reached a maturity where for certain applications it is commercially viable. However, as with all manufacturing methods, design for manufacture is crucial. Understanding how that method works is key to that.

This week’s Tech Tip Tuesday is a bit of a departure from the regular SOLIDWORKS tips and tricks I usually post in this feature. It was only a few months ago that eclipsed a million mobile users. Now, another product from Dassault Systemes is reaching a major milestone with reaching 3 million registered users, and 6.5 million downloads! So what is DraftSight, and why are there so many people using it?

This week, Dassault Systèmes SOLIDWORKS announced its effort to bring organized SOLIDWORKS Authorized Training Centers (SATC) across India. Over the next five months, we’re planning to open up to 50 SATCs that will provide engineering college students and professionals interested in building their skillsets with access to certified SOLIDWORKS training. The need for computer-aided design skill is on the rise in India and the country finds itself in working to bridge a sharp skills gap.

The second general session of SolidWorks World 2014 was all about the user community and customers. This past year, we had 14 new chapters for the SolidWorks User Group Network and over 800 people attending the SWUGN Summit events (they’re like miniature versions of SolidWorks World). The general session kicked off with a customer presentation featuring eatART, an organization that “fosters art research with a focus on large-scale, technically sophisticated art by supporting both independent and

Millions of tons of plastic are polluting the world’s oceans. It reaches the oceans through rivers and waterways, and then accumulates in five high-concentration areas called gyres. Boyan Slat, a student at the Delft University of Technology, and his Ocean Cleanup team believe that it’s possible to remove most of the plastic from the oceans in only five years using a series of floating filtration platforms anchored to the ocean floor, and massive floating booms attached to the platforms.

When I go biking during the summer, I rely on the frame of my bicycle to withstand stresses such as vibration and impact. As I speed down the trail, I think about the engineers and their process of designing a product that adeptly serves the needs of their customers. How did they test out the bicycle to make sure it doesn’t fall apart if the path becomes rocky? If the bike falls over, how did they make sure that the pedals don’t fall off?

Sustainable and renewable energy has become the way of the future. Before long, we may even be living in a world similar to the Jetsons (robot housemaid not included). Many car companies, such as Honda and Toyota, are developing hybrid and electrical cars to help us move away from fossil fuels. As the need for gas decreases, electric car drivers need a new way to rev their engines – compact AC charging units.

It’s no mistake that a New York Times headline from last September read "Space Tourism is Here". While the human race has already reached the final frontier, the majority of people have probably never ventured into space, let alone traveled beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. With the recent upspring of private companies focused on building crafts for human space flight and new developments in technologies and composite materials, SolidWorks has been able to lend a hand towards helping companies like
