This year’s SAE AERO Design West competition took place in the heart of the USA, nestled right in Fort Worth Texas. Students from all around the world and from different walks of life, filled the hotel lobby with propellers, DC motors, and aerodynamic fuselages, as they marched their planes in and out of the judges’ arena.

European Rover Challenge is Europe’s largest space and robotic featuring science, business, new-technology sector, and the general public. Held in Jasionka, Poland, last month, students, researchers, and industry professionals participated in the Martian robot competition and exhibition. Over 60 student teams took part from 12 countries, including Canada, Italy, Peru, Australia and U.S. Poland, with the largest participation, 17 teams, engaged the crowd in this exciting engineering competition.

The UK’s University School of Engineering Warwick Satellite Team (WUSAT) continues to innovate with their development of a cube-shaped nano satellite, carried into space on a REXUS rocket. This multi-discipline engineering team is using SOLIDWORKS to design and manufacture their product to support atmospheric research to establish a method for discovering Earth-like exoplanets.

The National University of Singapore (NUS) and our SOLIDWORKS Value Added Reseller Selfpac3D Pte Ltd hosted the largest SOLIDWORKS certification event in Singapore. NASA Sample Return Robot Challenge encourages innovation in autonomous robotics as teams locate and collect samples across a wide variety of terrain and obstacles without human intervention. The Cataglyphis Mountaineers robotics team from West Virginia University (WVU) college of engineering, under the direction of Dr Yu Gu, rose to the challenge, worked together, and last week won the $100,000 NASA prize. OSIRIS-REx (Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security Regolith Explorer) is a NASA New Frontier’s mission scheduled for launch in 2016 that will travel to the asteroid Bennu and return a pristine sample of the asteroid to Earth. The REgolith X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (REXIS) is a student collaboration instrument on-board the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft. REXIS is NASA risk Class D instrument and its design and development is largely student led.
