My users commonly use Copy Tree to copy an existing file in PDM, while simultaneously renaming it, and overwrite another existing file within the PDM. An undesired outcome is that the history is replaced on the file that is overwritten. Is there a setting to change this?

Re: Setting for PDM Copy Tree Overwriting File and History

Copy tree will allow you to overwrite existing files. We need it to not overwrite the history. The overwrite should be added as a new version.

huh, there must be a setting for whether or not that warning prevents the copy tree - it does not go here.

one workaround - open the source files in SW and save-as over the destination files.

Re: Setting for PDM Copy Tree Overwriting File and History

This appears to be addressed in SPR 756789."Copy Tree does not have support to create a new version of an existing checked out file.  If you copy over a checked out file, the original file will be replaced with the copied and its history will be reset as it is treated as a new file. The original file will be deleted and placed under deleted items in the folder properties.

Enhancement: Provide the ability to create a new version of a checked out file when it is created with a copy tree  (instead of overwriting ande deleting existing checked out file and its version history)"

Did you instigate this SPR? If not, I would recommend you attach yourself to the SPR and submit an impact report to your reseller to try and get the SPR priority bumped. It's already at a high priority with development though.

Re: Setting for PDM Copy Tree Overwriting File and History

I searched for SPR 756789 in the KB and did not produce any results.

Re: Setting for PDM Copy Tree Overwriting File and History

I searched for "Copy Tree does not have support to create a new version of an existing checked out file" in the KB and it produced SPR 756789. However, when I select it I am redirected to some other blank SolidWorks web page with a dialogue box stating "Message : Success" followed by a non-functional Next button

Re: Setting for PDM Copy Tree Overwriting File and History

That is annoying. Call yr VAR and they will be happy to attach you the SPR. They’ll be chuffed you have the SPR  number, did most of the work!

You usually don’t have to do that but that site is ancient in terms of technology (20+ years). Even not old, it’s pretty broad and presents quirks when other bits are being worked on.     ♀️

It might be visible to resellers only? Some articles are. I can assure you the SPR is there in full.
