In the fishtank - for a laugh.
SOLIDWORKS Forums

I've noticed that my forum points have been frozen since early yesterday morning.

I just looked at the leaderboards and some folks have received points today but many (including quite a few who usually get points.) haven't

Does anyone know what's up?

Re: In the fishtank - for a laugh. (Formerly "Are forum points frozen for some?)

It's been that way for years with my account.  Have spoken with Richard Doyle about it to see if he had any insight, etc. and he said it seems to be something odd going on with Jive that's not in his hands.

Yeah, I get fairly regular "Acclaim", but only the gifting/badge stuff seems to matter:

That is true. One last hurrah. I just figured it was the weather. Was 65 yesterday and now it is going to be 40. Then the big weekend storm that will be who knows what for here. One model is rain and little snow and one is 6"+ of snow.

Add me to the list of frozen.

Figures, when I got in the car this morning it was 32 an frost on everything. (normal high for Dallas this time of year is 60's)

Okay everyone, since I'm a short timer, I can finally yell.....

I CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE POINTS BEING FROZEN

According to Jive, this happens, but they insist that all points/rewards are eventually awarded.  I haven't taken the time to really dig deep into that "fact", but then again, who would have the time.

I'll admit to being a little frustrated over the situation because I see a lot of "the points don't really matter" comments, and yet when they freeze, well....

I hope it gets worked out in the long run (assuming Jive wants to fix it) and you all get your just rewards in a timely fashion

Richard, I like that line.  In my case it's probably best if I don't get my just rewards.  People's "just rewards" often don't coincide with what they think they deserve.

Richard Doyle, We, or at least I, never thought you could do anything about the points being frozen other than perhaps make Jive aware.

And as to " the points don't really matter" comments, I'm pretty sure that we're all aware that the only significance is as a kind of scoreboard for friendly rivalries. Even those don't really matter!

As the OP of this thread I can tell you with certainty that the thread was never meant as a criticism of you!

If you felt that it was I sincerely apologize.

Has there ever been any talk about changing the points to where they DO matter?

I don't mean to where they have actual value outside the forums, but to where they actually show who is making valuable contributions?

It boggles my mind that the points system actually assigns value to the action of liking a post.  In most threads, you can gain more points by mindlessly clicking the "like" button without even reading any of them than you can by actually coming up with a solution to the problem at hand.  That's ludicrous.

Points used to actually be an indicator of how helpful and knowledgeable people were.  Now the number is absolutely and completely garbage.

Meh... don't mean to be a [fill in the blank].  It's just kinda dumb.

"What do you want this number to be?  OK, see this button?  Click it that number of times!  Yay!  Look what a good boy you are!"

Then of course you have this thread...

"Wah wah, the number doesn't match my clicky clicky...  Let's complain about it more than 500 times..."

Here's an idea if you don't like your current number...  Write the number you want on a post-it.  Stick it on your dang monitor.

Better yet, pull up Photoshop and stick yourself in the list wherever you want with whatever number... It means the same thing when the number is self-generated with a meaningless, valueless action.

Sorry for the verbal diarrhea.    It's worth as little as the points....

Enjoyed the yelling... congrats on not having to worry about this one anymore!

Josh,

I know that the points do get skewed a bit and I mean not disrespect at all, but if you look at the top points earners (say the top 20), they are all either well versed in many aspects (some are definitely experts in some or many areas) of the software and/or they can point you in the right direction if they don't know. Other opinions or directions are also added or new questions come out of the answers given.  Overall, we learn, teach, help and request help and solve or get solutions to otherwise unsolvable situations.

I am definitely no expert, but many of my points came from informative (sometimes controversial) posts or comments that either helped people out or pointed them in a direction to get an answer.  Even I have had some "Correct Answers".

Yes, it's a bit of a game, but that is what makes it more enjoyable to read and respond to posts or comments.and increases the desire to read other posts and learn things that we didn't even know existed but can really use.

If this was a dry, information only, Just the facts - simple answers type forum (as most are) there would be very few people using it and we all would suffer by not having the ability or knowledge of this site to use as a resource or inspiration.

When the boss says "Do this Now" and you don't know how to - you can come here and ask and get an answer or several options to get the job done quickly and efficiently. Your other option would be to go buy a book and read for hours to see if you even could find your answers.  Here you ask and the answers come in to you.

This is virtually the only forum I go on because I enjoy this forum - the others are all boring and put me to sleep.  A little levity or game playing or pushing some limits may not be the "Correct Answer" to a problem but they make people enjoy coming here and searching and responding and someone will get or give the "Correct Answer" - or get something fixed, enhanced, updated in SP's or future versions.

A bottom line - how would you propose to make the points system so it DID matter? I'm sure many would be open to finding other options that we all could like and use - but this forum (in its current form)  IS working and helping and active.  Look how many posts are done each week.  What's a good system for some may be a terrible system for others. It is also a place that we get to do the Top Ten Suggestions that allows our input to go into future versions of SWX - and if the forum was not enjoyable that wouldn't happen.

Maybe you could make a post about changing the point system and put down some suggestions you have and see what others think and would add - there is always room for improvement and maybe there would be viable inputs that can be added or changed.

Again, I mean no disrespect and you have valid comments, but I myself definitely do not consider this system to be "absolutely and  completely garbage".

I completly agree with you buddy....and another thing too...

I have a complete idea from who knows more than me....I readed them to find a new point of view to my knowlegde about SW or the another people who has huge expertise on real facts on industry.

Garbage or don't, depends your own knowledge....I alwyas made a mention when somebody has better expertise than me....and I will try to give them all points thats I could.

But good knowledge to me it isn't garbage. At this point I got a clear idea from who has huge expertise an who try to learn from people who wants to share or who don't want to share nothing.

Forum is good, no argument there.  Otherwise I wouldn't be here.  Levity etc. all good things.  Lots of good answers, challenges, ideas, etc.  Have fun in this thread and the kitty dump etc.  But when you earn points for doing things that are of zero value or knowledge or contribution, then the points are garbage.  The points are the ONLY thing I am saying is garbage.  No names, but there are folks with gobs of points that couldn't SW themselves out of a paper bag.  3 people liked the songs I listen to at work.  If I read the list correctly, that's more points than figuring out which obscure setting is hosing someone's assembly?  If I "like"d every post in this thread, it would count the same as 50 correct answers.  You talk about games... It's like playing basketball, except that you get a point for every time you bounce the ball in addition to 2's and 3's for actually shooting baskets.  Heck, I'm getting a point for the worthless post I'm writing now.  And all those one-word posts trying to up the count over at the dump?  POINTS!

As I said, you used to actually have to contribute value (be marked "helpful" or something, or correct) to get points.  There was still fun and games, but having a bunch of points actually meant you actually knew your s___ and used it to help people.  You couldn't just manufacture your own points through meaningless drivel.

Re: In the fishtank - for a laugh. (Formerly "Are forum points frozen for some?)

Josh Brady - Your thoughts are exactly why I don't like the point system here on the forum and especially since you really don't need to know anything or rather very little SW.  Anybody can accumulate huge amounts of points in a very short time, however the big kicker for me was when they decided to give people badges with points, that's when I knew the point system will be out of whack very quickly.  Plus setting up a system that can easily pass Deepak Gupta is just not right in my book.....

One of the biggest factors is amount of "Forum Time" verses Experience/Knowledge of the software.  There is one thing that I think means something, but again it's still reflects forum time, is the following ranking....

Of course points are great... When they mean something!  You should get points for helping others.  However, (again, if I read the list correctly) members get 3 points if somebody posts something (anything) into a thread that they started.  Since John specifically mentioned not liking this kind of points, I'll point this out: He has received over 30,000 points from the 10,000+ posts in the Kitty Dump thread.   You get so many points for doing things that are not really helpful to anyone that the real "helpful" points are diluted.  How many points had Deepak received for correct answers (which should be the most valuable thing, right?) About 8000.  That's assuming my math is right and every "Level" represents 50 points.  Is it really 3x more valuable to start a thread where people can just shoot the $___ than to answer 800 questions?

I'm not sure about the 3 points thing but I think  it's fair. When I joint a club, I have to accept its rules. When my design becomes a good product, some of the money go back to my paidcheck.

He doesn't keep the points, which proves the points don't matter to him.

John Stoltzfus

Actually, what inspired me most is the time (personal time with no pay being here) you and others commit to the group

It doesn't a simple or tough SW issue, many can benefit from the help here

No matter how busy I'm ,  I still try to sneak in once a day to read what people discuss here and  learn some - it's free

Of course... I am definitely not saying that I begrudge anyone the points they have, or that I think anyone is points-grubbing or intentionally going about trying to game the system.  And I believe folks when they say the points don't matter.  John's a cool guy, and I know he didn't start a thread scheming to get points.  It's just what happened because of the way the forum is set up.  I know pretty much everyone is just doing there thing, and then it's like, "Oh, look, points.  Woohoo."  But how much more special would it be if you only got points for doing important things?  Not that they'd have any real value still, but getting a badge with points where those points took effort, wouldn't that mean more to you?

Re: In the fishtank - for a laugh.

Anybody can accumulate huge amounts of points in a very short time...

Yes, most of which can do so without Photoshop.  Alas, not quite anyone:

sshot-2018-12-05-[11-00-13].png

Jive seems to have odd issues going on, as I'm awarded points every day from various "likes" and stuff---but those points are never tallied.  I'm probably not the only one seeing this.

Brings up interesting philosophical questions, right?  What is the currency of points, and what should it be?  Josh argues it should denote helpfulness.  Perhaps so, but maybe Jive's motivation is simply to encourage interaction (social or otherwise) and therefore interaction itself is the currency of points.

Regardless, whatever the currency is or should be on the back-side of a point system, perhaps it ought to be consistent?  Perhaps it ought to work?  Maybe there can be innovation such that both Josh and Jive are satisfied, which could be done via multiple currencies---one social and one to designate gurus?  To a degree, we apparently have this already with badges and other stuff.

"Badges?  We ain't got no badges!  We don't need no badges.  I don't have to show you any steenkin' badges!"

I'd take the students out of the last group - There are some who just want to pass the class and use this forum for their assignments while others are eager to learn - they are super!!! . I was speechless (not being humiliated) few times when junior high kids told me I could do (SW) diff. way

For sure there are two categories as stated in your case, however mostly what we see here on the forum are the ones that barely squeak through their class.

Is it really 3x more valuable to start a thread where people can just shoot the $___ than to answer 800 questions?

Absolutely if you look at keeping 10,000 replies that don't mean nothing off of meaningful posts.  In the past good threads would start to get trashed because most people get caught up in little talk.  Take a look at past threads, usually after the 3rd page none of the comments had anything to do with the question.  So yeah there is a huge value in seeing posts where the comments turn to - "If you want to continue take your comments to the Kitty Dump".  It still happens, but on a much smaller scale then it did before.

The next thing I would like to do is to write a book based on the Kitty Dump, first it would make no sense, have no central character, nor any plot, it'd be one $hitty Mess

I'm not saying that there's no value in keeping threads from getting trashed.  But you really, honestly think that the single action of starting one deliberately off-topic thread is over 3x more valuable than 800 times of answering real user questions?

Re: In the fishtank - for a laugh.

Josh Brady - Again Absolutely - Why.... Because that's the mathematical calculation of the Forum Setup, it has more value, you just pointed it out 30,000 is a lot more than 8,000.  So as an engineer you should realize that more digits in front of the period has more values then a number with less, unless there is a dash ahead of it......

Now Do I think It's FAIR, do I think it's Right, NO WAY JOSE and that is just another example where the forum points are absolutely meaningless...  Plus it's really wrong that we can get more points being a jerk then being helpful and sharing our knowledge...

Cheers

Rubén Rodolfo Balderrama, No, I just thought that this thread has become more of a Kitty Dump Lite so I changed the name. The original intent of this thread was just to see if other forum members were frozen on that day like I was.

It was never intended to become a debate on the merits of the point system.

Early in the thread someone suggested that I change the name of the thread. I did that but kept the ( formerly Are forum points frozen for some) in the name. That may have been a mistake.
