Betty Baker was the only female mechanical engineer to graduate from her college class. She was also the first female product engineer hired at Ashley Furniture Industries, Inc., over 35 years ago. The company is headquartered in Arcadia, Wisconsin, and manufactures and distributes home furniture products worldwide. “There are inherent challenges in being the only woman in the engineering department,” says Baker.

I love the look of stained glass and wanted to make something that would have a similar aesthetic. I made this lantern using wood, clear acrylic, and a disco light! Design I designed my final assembly in SOLIDWORKS to make sure that all of my pieces would fit together perfectly. I chose to make my pieces symmetrical because I think it offers simplicity to an otherwise ornate design and it will greatly facilitate the assembly process.

As time closes in to end the year, I have met hundreds of educators and students – through video, chat, and email. I am always taking on a new maker project and one of my favorite things to make is a new purse. I get to enjoy my new creation almost every day. We first met Danielle Boyer (Ojibwe) when she was 17. You may know her as one of the Main Stage speakers at 3DEXPERIENCE World 2020, as someone featured in past SOLIDWORKS Educational blogs, or from her appearance in our Born to Design podcast. We are proud to announce the winners of the first SOLIDWORKS xDesign Challenge for India! 1600+ students and 249 teams had 41 days to work on their Futuristic Public Transport designs. This year’s SAE AERO Design West competition took place in the heart of the USA, nestled right in Fort Worth Texas. Students from all around the world and from different walks of life, filled the hotel lobby with propellers, DC motors, and aerodynamic fuselages, as they marched their planes in and out of the judges’ arena. Day 1 of the event was all about technical qualifications. A warm Texas morning welcomed the teams to the Thunderbird Field that hosted the Day 2’s agenda: Flight.

Hernan Malleret, an industrial designer from Buenos Aires in Argentina, is a self taught SOLIDWORKS user. He started using the software in 1997 and was able to self-learn the program because of its user-friendly interface he says. Starting with designing plastic pieces, Hernan discovered how SOLIDWORKS allowed him to develop his work in a more precise manner. “It is very intuitive”, he tells us.

Winner of the Top Sales Representative award at the SOLIDWORKS World 2017, Caroline Dee tells us about her journey from starting as a saleswoman-by-chance to becoming the best in the field. Youngest of six brothers and sisters, Caroline grew up in Natick MA, and now lives in Sudbury, MA, with her husband and her dog. She is a proud mother of two talented college-going daughters. She majored in business studies at UMass Amherst with a focus in marketing, and eventually fell into a job in Sales.
