Fun with Part Patterns: This part shows several different, easy to understand part patterns. There are seven patterns covering six different part pattern types. We cover some of the pattern functionality introduced recently to help users be more efficient and have more control of their patterns. There is also one example of a composite curve.

Forced perspective is a film and photographic technique used to fool the eye to think something is smaller that it actually is or something is larger than it is. We tried this technique to take two different sized block look like they are the same size and making a little spaceship looking larger than it is. This technique isn’t used as much in film as CGI (Computer Generated Images) is much cheaper and easier to do these days, But some films like Lord of the Rings used these practical effects

The biggest let down in 3D printing is the surface detail with visible layer lines. Sometimes this can be accepted and is understood as the circumstances of 3D printing. But sometimes this is not good enough and you require a good looking model. Whether it’s presenting to a client or making a replica prop there are a few techniques one can use to finish off 3D prints to have a quality finish.

SOLIDWORKS 2017 has integrated some great new functions and features, especially when it comes to working with weldments and/or sheet metal and their associated cut lists. In previous versions, if there was any sort of change or edit made to a solid-body component within the part file, the cut list would create an entirely new item folder, instead of staying in the original item folder. With the new Cut List Sorting Option, cut lists are more flexible and can be worked with to avoid instances

Prior to SOLIDWORKS 2017In previous versions of SOLIDWORKS, changes to models involving beam elements would result in an error when SOLIDWORKS Simulation was re-activated. It would notify the user to edit the beam joints – as seen in the image below. To resolve this error, the user had to open the joints in the simulation and simply recalculate them. This problem resulted in additional mouse clicks for the user while simultaneously slowing down design iterations.

The Elephant in the Room - Large Assemblies In this blog we will be looking to give you some tips and tricks as well as noting some changes made in SOLIDWORKS 2017 when it comes to ‘the elephant in the room’ that is Large Assemblies. When working with large assemblies, you could end up with hundreds of parts, mates of various forms and several configurations; performance and stability are always key. To get the most out of SOLIDWORKS when working with assemblies you should always keep note of

Modelling The Rear Wheels This final instalment of our series on how to design and build your own Drift Trike we model the Rear Wheels. Previous tutorials have dealt with the Frame, Forks and Saddle. Here we model the last part needed to complete the Drift Trike assembly. Stuart will be modelling a 6th of the wheel spokes and then patterning this to give the whole design.

There are many ways to create your parts and assemblies in SOLIDWORKS. A common way is the so called “Bottom-Up” assembly method, where assemblies are created by adding existing parts in an assembly. Another approach is the “Top-Down” assembly method, where parts are created in the context of the assembly. In this tech blog, I want to focus on the master model technique, where parts are driven from a single part, which contains overall size, location and gross geometry for an entire assembly.

Drift Trike Saddle Design in SOLIDWORKS The third installment of our series on how to design and build your own Drift Trike in SOLIDWORKS, we model the saddle. Stuart will be modelling this part using a mirror technique so in effect he only has to model one side of the saddle, saving time and effort. The saddle is the part of the trike which you are always in contact with, so it is important that it is ergonomic and comfortable. Including high fillets and draft is a great way to prevent sharp

Author: Scott Durksen, CSWE, Javelin Technologies Starting in SOLIDWORKS 2014, you have the ability to lock rotation of concentric mates. This can help avoid additional mates required if you didn’t want the components to rotate. How to quickly tell if a concentric mate rotation has been locked In order to see if a concentric mate rotation has been locked, simply review the mate icon for the component. A regular concentric icon will show two concentric circles.

In honor of America’s Independence Day, we decided to simulate an aerial fireworks display in SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation. We wondered just how closely we could recreate the effect, and we also had a few specific questions to answer; such as how much the wind will move the shell off course, and what impact the angle of the tube will have on the final trajectory. We’ll use this information to plan a big fireworks display in SOLIDWORKS and in the back yard.

Fork Design The second installment of our series on how to design and build your own Drift Trike, we focus on the Forks. The forks of the trike are used for both supporting the main wheel and being the link to steering the wheel. Stuart takes a simple technical document found freely on the internet to base his design. This tutorial will guide you through taking a 2D sketch and creating the 3D CAD model inside SOLIDWORKS.

SOLIDWORKS contains a lot of features, but most users only use a small selection of them. In this tech blog I want to reveal a feature, which is relatively unknown to many users, but yet very powerful: Delete Face. It is a feature which I use often on day to day basis to solve some customer issues. Where to find it?

The new 3D Interconnect functionality introduced in SOLIDWORKS 2017 is useful when working with a variety of native non-SOLIDWORKS files, including parts that are sheet metal in nature. 3D Interconnect Sheet Metal Example A Note On MethodologyThere are a few ways to add sheet metal information to a part referencing an external file. The trick when using 3D Interconnect is to add bends specifically using the Convert To Sheet Metal feature. Yes, the Add Bends feature will work initially.

Author: Jim Peltier, CSWE, Javelin Technologies Often times, SOLIDWORKS Dimension Styles are passed without notice because it is quite easy to get the job done without using them. However, they can be used for dimensions that have very common notes attached to them. For instance, when I used to design automated machinery, often times, we would add text to a dimension such as “BTS” (Build To Suit), or “DRILL AND REAM” or “TRANSFER AT ASSEMBLY” among others. I’ve created a simple example below:

It’s safe to say that Quidditch is Harry Potter’s favorite wizarding pastime. As Hagrid would say, a wizard’s passion for Quidditch is the equivalent to a muggle’s passion for football. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the first publication in the series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. To celebrate, we are showing SOLIDWORKS users how to model the Golden Snitch – the little ball that Harry loves to hate.

SOLIDWORKS-Minecraft-Blog-SolidSolutions What is SOLIDWORKS API?SOLIDWORKS API is a gateway to automating your design process and data management. Using .NET compatible languages (VB, C#, C++) one can write small macros or build full-blown add-ins for modelling, routine edits and feeding data from one software package to another. We at Solid Solutions offer bespoke coding on a consultancy basis.

Often times parts vary slightly in design, which can result in different geometry. The Compare Documents command is used to compare the document properties, the features used, the geometry itself, or a bill of materials between two documents in SOLIDWORKS. Because the documents can be so closely compared, it helps identify areas that may cause mechanical issues based on differences in the design geometry. This is an especially great tool for comparing imported geometry to a repaired or modified
