After teaching 1000’s of students and writing about SOLIDWORKS for over 25 years, David Planchard, emeritus WPI, is exploring xDesign. Through the SOLIDWORKS xDesign Lesson series, David helps educators understand the differences and similarities between xDesign and SOLIDWORKS through simple examples. He also introduces new apps in the engineering design process. I’ve been excited to explore SOLIDWORKS xDesign and the 3DEXPERIENCE platform with simple examples for the past 11 weeks.

Student Teams work all year long to prepare for grueling competitions. Designs are perfected over years for the ultimate machine. Long before the students take to the track, they design, analyze, and then re-design/re-test their components and vehicles. I was fortunate to interview TEAM Eta, a Shell Eco Marathon team from Somaiya Vidyavihar University (SVU), in Mumbai, India.

The Dassault Systemes 3DEXPERIENCE Lab Boston, located in the North American Headquarters at Waltham, MA, has two components – a Startup Accelerator and a Fab Lab. The Accelerator works with early to mid-stage startups that focus on new technologies and products that can shift the scales of Innovation across domains of City, Life, Lifestyle, Internet of Things and Ideation. Dereck Sanchez, a rising junior in high school, has been working with his team, R4 Robotics, for all of seven years now; but the most impressive part is that he’s only seventeen years old. His team joins many BEST Robotics competitions every year, which last approximately six weeks long each. At the age of eleven, he started learning SOLIDWORKS so his team could brainstorm what they wanted the robot to look like before they would actually start creating it.

This year’s SAE AERO Design West competition took place in the heart of the USA, nestled right in Fort Worth Texas. Students from all around the world and from different walks of life, filled the hotel lobby with propellers, DC motors, and aerodynamic fuselages, as they marched their planes in and out of the judges’ arena. Day 1 of the event was all about technical qualifications. A warm Texas morning welcomed the teams to the Thunderbird Field that hosted the Day 2’s agenda: Flight.

Hernan Malleret, an industrial designer from Buenos Aires in Argentina, is a self taught SOLIDWORKS user. He started using the software in 1997 and was able to self-learn the program because of its user-friendly interface he says. Starting with designing plastic pieces, Hernan discovered how SOLIDWORKS allowed him to develop his work in a more precise manner. “It is very intuitive”, he tells us.

“I love to be able to take a person’s dream and write it down in pictures for them to see. With SOLIDWORKS they can see all aspects of their design and have a video to show how to use it. I have learned so much about the versatility and the expansive ability in creating all sorts of models in SOLIDWORKS. It truly is an amazing program.
