My name is Kirby Downey. I am a Senior Production Technician at 3DPRINTUK. I am a maker, a creator in my spare time, and also a SOLIDWORKS User Group Leader and a SOLIDWORKS champion. These last two titles I have 3DEXPERIENCE World to thank, because if I didn’t attend these events since 2017, then I would not be so involved with the SOLIDWORKS community.

With global warming on the rise, everyone has a responsibility to be mindful of the environment. Design companies have an even bigger responsibility and opprtunity to make a difference with the way they design products that can have a gentler impact on the environment. Our customers are well aware of this and definitely focusing on being moreeco-conscious. At SOLIDWORKS giving you the tools to meet your goals, including to be more sustainable, innovative, and of course create an experience, is a

On the Community and User Advocacy Team, one of our constant goals is to highlight the love, passion, and expertise that SOLIDWORKS users have for all our products. It’s a truly rewarding experience to see a project to completion that accomplishes this goal. One project, that was more than one year in the making, has accomplished this goal in a big way. As part of an event called SLUGME7 (The SOLIDWORKS Largest User Group Meeting Ever), our team created a design for a very special recipient

I normally don’t take on commission work for 3D-printed aircraft, but when DBT Aero reached out to me in need of an R/C test bed for their full-scale design, it was hard to pass up the opportunity to work with them on such a challenging and interesting project. My initial reaction to seeing images of its design was, “Wow, that is not your typical looking aircraft. I really want to see that thing fly.” But as I’ve continued to work with them on this project, I’ve come to learn that DBT Aero’s

SOLIDWORKS LIVE has been dedicated to showcasing the best of our software use cases and, inherently, our user community for years now. Over the past several months, we’ve put 1+ hours each into doing both of those things within subject areas like design, simulation, data management, manufacturing, and more! But, particularly for those four areas, we did our best to deliver an instructive, compelling episode for each key CAD/CAE software domain listed. This blog is a round-up of sorts, cataloging

In 2021, The SLUGME Committee had a wild idea to hold a 24-hour event and deliver technical presentations from around the globe. This seemed like an insurmountable task, and it was very far outside everyone’s comfort zone. With the help of many people, in August of 2021, we pulled off an epic event known as SLUGME6. You can watch a highlight video of that event here.

Most of my formative years as a kid were spent in the 1990’s, when the movie Memphis Belle was released. Being an airplane nerd, it instantly became my favorite film and still is to this day. It’s not really a critically acclaimed movie, but if you have any interest at all in aviation or World War II history, you must see it. This movie has it all: it has action, it has drama, and even some pretty great comedic scenes, like one featuring my favorite type of soup.

I don’t want to spoil the show for you, and I encourage all of you to go watch the finals on Discovery Channel.

As Senior Editor of Make: Magazine, I’ve seen plenty of impressive 3D printing projects. One thing that always stood out to me was the ingenuity displayed when people come up with ways of printing mechanical parts that come off the printer already interconnected and ready to move. Imagine, for example, printing a toy car on a 3D printer and not having to assemble anything, it just comes off the build plate and is ready to roll with functioning axles and everything. Well, if you’ve played around

Last year, I designed and built a 3D printable R/C version of a scale aerobatic airplane called the Super Chipmunk. You may recognize it if you attended 3DEXPERIENCE World 2020 as it totally upstaged me on the main stage during Wednesday’s general session. This airplane holds a special place in my heart. One of the first wooden built-up kits my dad and I ever built was a Super Chipmunk manufactured by a company called Carl Goldberg Products.

It can seem overwhelming to keep pace with the latest and greatest technologies that intersect with engineering and manufacturing: 3D printing, cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, augmented reality, virtual reality, smart factories, and the internet of things (IoT). There is so much to consider, especially in a delicate economy that continually faces unpredictable disruptions. Even so, staying on top of new technologies can be essential for product innovation and

When additive manufacturing (AM) first started becoming more popular, some manufacturers worried that their very livelihoods were at stake. Others thought that 3D printing was a gimmick and could only be used for prototypes or expensive one-offs. Still, others believed that literally everyone would have a 3D printer, and consumers would simply download a file and print what they needed right in the comfort of their homes. And the media onslaught in those early days made it sound like anyone

SOLIDWORKS is a word synonymous with design, but today we do so much more; design is just one part of turning ideas into reality. After all, nothing exists until it is built. A design is an intangible, digital representation of a product.

3D Printing techniques have come a long way since they were first introduced and used mainly for the purposes of rapid prototyping. Since then, advances in technology enabled designers and engineers to use a variety of processes and materials to produce complex shapes or geometries at scale, while cutting down on costs. In order to reap the true benefits of the additive manufacturing process, engineers must optimize their designs for manufacturability using 3D printers. In April, we invited
