Mods is a fabrication platform developed by MIT Center for Bits and Atoms, Dr. Neil Gershenfeld. Mods provides a set of software tools for personal fabrication, intended for use with machines common to Fab Labs, Shawn Liu introduces mods and the integration between mods and SolidWorks. mods and xDesign Fab labs provide widespread access to modern means for invention. They began as an outreach project from MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA), and became into a collaborative and global network.

In the SOLIDWORKS community, we are fortunate to meet talented innovators that are making a difference in people’s lives. Many volunteer their time with organizations that do good for others. Last month, I was fortunate to learn about Remap.org.uk that designs and builds equipment to help people live more independently. These fully autonomous robots are able to navigate and “think” for themselves; but, there is a problem. This year’s SAE AERO Design West competition took place in the heart of the USA, nestled right in Fort Worth Texas. Students from all around the world and from different walks of life, filled the hotel lobby with propellers, DC motors, and aerodynamic fuselages, as they marched their planes in and out of the judges’ arena. Day 1 of the event was all about technical qualifications. A warm Texas morning welcomed the teams to the Thunderbird Field that hosted the Day 2’s agenda: Flight.

September is here and it’s back to the grind for college students. A new batch of engineering majors are gearing up for the toughest four (or more) years of their lives. There are dozens of subjects an engineering major can focus on, and the tragedy of majoring in any engineering field is that in spite of all the classes, studying, allnighters, and existential dread, college can only prepare you for so much.
