I recently took a trip to visit some of the schools I work in Montana to discuss their STEM Program. One of the schools I visited called Billings Career Center, a Career, and Technical education-focused school, had an exciting project they worked on with NASA using our STEM in a BOX program. The teacher and his students designed parts in SOLIDWORKS, then 3D printed prototypes, and machined the final versions. They then sent the finished versions to NASA.

Watching the WPI FSAE team during Tilt Test at FORMULA Michigan makes you hold your breath and celebrate the accomplishments of so many young engineers. The SOLIDWORKS team visits with 1000’s of students this time of year at SAE Collegiate Events, Maker Faire’s, Robotics competitions, graduations and more. It is great to see so many wonderful designs and the products students create for senior capstone projects, the middle school science fairs, and Solar Car teams like CalSol from UC Berkeley.

This year’s SAE AERO Design West competition took place in the heart of the USA, nestled right in Fort Worth Texas. Students from all around the world and from different walks of life, filled the hotel lobby with propellers, DC motors, and aerodynamic fuselages, as they marched their planes in and out of the judges’ arena. Day 1 of the event was all about technical qualifications. A warm Texas morning welcomed the teams to the Thunderbird Field that hosted the Day 2’s agenda: Flight.
