The SOLIDWORKS Mold Making exam is now available! Previously known as “Mold Tools,” this exam is a more industry-focused exam that includes a collection of new challenges and data sets that will test your mold making skills and Mold industry knowledge using SOLIDWORKS. These challenges include everything from understanding mold actuation, such as a 3-plate mold design with mechanical stops, to uncovering potential mold problems, such as flash issues and cooling. You’ll be given problems sets,

Technology is rapidly evolving and our smart devices are playing an ever-increasing role in our day-to-day lives. One may not realize the importance of these devices. For example, imagine you’re traveling alone in a foreign country, and you’re relying on your smart device to help translate, navigate, and operate your trip around the country. What would you do if your device ran out of battery charge or lost internet connection.

Ever wondered what glass-filled nylon or other engineering plastics are? Did you even know that engineering plastics even had a glass-filled grade? The most common engineering plastics, such as Nylon 6 & Nylon 66, Acetal, and PEEK, all have glass-filled options. What I discovered though is that the percentage of glass varies, sometimes it is as low as 20 percent glass added than 25 percent and finally 30 percent glass, depending on the actual material but obviously the higher the percentage, the

The Manufacturing Technology Centre at the Coventry – University of Warwick, UK, developed and implemented a Design, Programming and Robotics residential course this past summer. MTC shared their story with SOLIDWORKS. The goal of the course was to design a robotic rowboat using a combination of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and programming skills to solve an engineering challenge. There were 3 main elements to this challenge;

It’s that time of the year again when we introduce a new release of SOLIDWORKS Composer. We’ve had one full year to improve the product and this time around we had a lot of our multi-year projects come to fruition. The overall theme of this release was to deliver improvements on productivity, integrations with other SOLIDWORKS products and features while also balancing the need to build in the architecture for future improvements. As we do with all SOLIDWORKS products, everything that went into

Model-Based Definition (MBD) is a journey. Defining product and manufacturing information (PMI) on 3D models rather than 2D drawings is just a start. After that, it’s vital to serve the downstream processes such as inspection, fabrication, and suppliers, in an organized, consumable and actionable fashion. Regardless of MBD or 2D drawings, the functional purpose is to communicate.

Shrinkage is inherent in the injection molding process. Shrinkage occurs when the density of polymer varies from the processing temperature to the ambient temperature. During injection molding, the variation in shrinkage, both globally and through the cross-section of a part, creates internal stresses. These residual stresses act on a part with effects similar to externally applied stresses in the injection molding of thermoplastic plastics.

Technology has marched unstoppably into more areas of life than we would have ever imagined. From micro-chipped dogs to driverless cars, to wearables and beyond, technology permeates the world in more ways than ever before. Not even golf, with its hallowed history and strong sense of tradition, has remained unchanged by the rapid advances in technology. In golf courses all over the world, golfing tech is instigating transformation.

In our case, the “napkin sketch” quickly turns into a Sketch Picture in SOLIDWORKS to start the design. I had a request to create a dolphin model and I decided to make it a case study on going from a 2D sketch to SOLIDWORKS to a 3D print. Being a long-time user of SOLIDWORKS but new to 3D printing, I wanted to pass forward what I already learned to anyone unfamiliar to 3D printing. First, the top and side profiles were created and brought in as two separate Sketch Pictures which helped to create

Tracy is a Mac user, and I like using my iPad as much as possible because of its portability and the cool apps so this will test the true cloud capability of xDesign. I feel confident we’ll be able to collaborate and come up with a cool design that not only keeps the squirrels away from the bird feeders but will look really cool on our deck. There are a couple of design requirements I have in mind for the new bird

Before I begin the real topic of this blog, I like to comment on my journey through CAD technology and what I’ve experienced over the last 40+ years in my career. CAD has come a long, long way in my lifetime. Back in the late 1970’s at Xerox, I was introduced to Computer Graphics or CG as we called it back then. CG ran on terminals hooked up to VAX’s to do 3D design using wireframe techniques.
