I've had this problem for a long time and always associated it to the fact that I had the 3DConnexion program on my computer but since I moved to Windows 10 I haven't reinstalled the program, yet I still get this problem.

What happens is the dynamic highlighting will constantly turn itself off. I do not have a 3D mouse connected to my computer, nor the program for 3D mouses. I've been trying for many years to try and find what could be the cause but to no avail. Some of my co-workers think it might be associated to when the program starts mentionning that you're running out of ressources, but I'm not sure as I don't see the message very often.

Does anyone know what else could cause this?

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

I don't remember anyone else reporting that issue here who wasn't using a 3d mouse, so I'm surprised to hear that.  It happened to me frequently some time ago, but it's pretty much stopped in recent years.  You said it's happened to you for many years.  I assume that was with multiple computers, and multiple versions of SW?

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

Is it maybe a large assy mode thing?  It seems to me that when I get over the 500 component threshold, some things happen.

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

That could be somewhat a root cause but we do not use large assembly mode because we don't find it very reliable. Perhaps it reaches the limit that would let it go to large assembly mode if the box was checked and the setting turns itself off, I'll try raising that number.

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

We've been on 2014 and 2016 and had the problem on both but our computers are all very similar if not the same so it's not been tested on multiple computer setups. We did work with a 3D mouse at first but most draftsmen didn't like it and gave their 3D mouses to the engineers but we all still get the problem. Mine's collecting dust on the shelf next to me.

Edit: Many years refers to 2014 to 2019 going through 2 versions(2014 and 2016) and multiple SP's.

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

It’s a system option so if the checkmark keeps toggling off, I would suspect something is resetting your registry or your user profile doesn’t have full permissions to registry or is corrupted.

A simple test is to try another windows user profile and see if the behavior persists there.

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

(Might be video card related but in my experience, that’s less likely than above)

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

Damn I thought I was seeing things.

Its happening in SW2019 SP1.

It could be me or something else.

I'll be switching between sketch, assembly and drawing and it'll be off.

Just started SW and its off.

I'm watching it yesterday to see when it happen, haven't found it yet.

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

Hey Nadia,

I've reset my registry a few times in the past to fix certain problems but the behavior has always persisted. I also have all the admin access possible and the problem occurs for 8 draftsmen, including me.

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

That's the thing for me too, switching back and forth and then I eventually notice it while I'm trying to do a dimension and am having a hard time picking a certain edge or point and then realize ''Why is the DH not working again?!?''. I cancel the command, turn it back on and continue whatever I was doing.

I was hoping it'd be fixed in 2019 as we're supposed to move to it soon.

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

Okay, I had just turned it on about 15 minutes ago and was working in an assembly the whole time. I got the ''Ressource maxed out'' message and went to check my setting and the damn thing is turned off! This might be what causes it after all.

Edit: Or not, I turned the setting back on, did my command that made the ''Ressource maxed out'' message pop up and went to check back and the setting was still checked...

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

There was a time (many releases ago) when importing a certain file type (IGES, if memory serves) would turn it off every time.  I think that was supposedly fixed, maybe it's returned?  Do you import a lot?

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

I don't do much importing anymore since we have pretty much our whole database of models, it might have to something to do with the Add-on I use to populate my properties. I'm doing some more testing this morning since I have a bit of free time.

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

Def try replicating problem on a different user profile if you can....sounds like you have a file or process you can ‘make it happen‘ on....

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

As I said, it's replicable across at least 8 different profiles in the company, not just mine. Still hasn't turned back off.

Are they all using that Add-in for populating properties?

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

I see same behavior.  Not using any addin.

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

Indeed, it is very rare that it is turned off. There are a few weird things it does, like when I use the pack and go functionality from that program it sometimes switches the extensions from capital letters to lower case.

When we started using it, they also didn't know what enveloppes were so we had to explain to them what enveloppes were because the program didn't ignore enveloppes back then.

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

Yikes! That is no fun...

There was previously documented issue with 3D Connexion - The Dynamic Highlight option is temporarily disabled by the 3D controller driver software for performance reasons, but is switched on again when the user finishes rotating/zooming the view. That one is a few years old...

Do you have a driver installed for that device, even if you don't have that device?

Also, which option is toggling or is it both?

Tools > Options > System Options > FeatureManager > Dynamic highlight

Tools > Options > System Options > Display/Selection > Dynamic highlight from graphics view

Note: all those different modes for loading assemblies lighter could possibly affect this option.

If it's 8 profiles, it's not impossible that there is something consistent among them that's causing this... but hard to tell...

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

That might be it.

I turned the option off on 3D mouse and see what happen.

By: Frederick Law  Wed, 06 Feb 2019 14:35:07 GMT
Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

I had 3D mouse Disable Dynamic Highlight option turn back on.

I can see its working when panning and rotating.

It was working well and Highlight just got turned off.

Turn it back on.

Tried to repeat what I've done but couldn't.

It wasn't STEP import.

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

Don't have the drivers installed. I had never noticed there was a dynamic highlight setting for the feature manager.

The one that keeps turning off for me is the one in Display/Selection. I'm still working with it on, I'll eventually catch what causes it I think/hope.

SW turning off Dynamic Highlight when rotate, not 3D mouse driver.

Maybe the 3dcontrol Add-in is active?

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

Just spit balling here, but is it possible that someone with a 3D mouse made your Templates? I have found that Templates (Assembly, Part, and DRW) will retain some pretty surprising information that should be user preference such as the width of feature manager tree. Another example is someone before my time made the original solidworks tutorial templates reference a company sheet format from before a merger and I discovered that all of our newer templates reference this sheet format from years ago. Its a stretch but maybe the templates "remember" the 3D mouse from years ago.

If you were desperate I might suggest making the same or similar circumstance using sanitized templates.

Joel Gilbert Unfortunately nope Not even installed

Justin Pires

You know what, that could actually make sense. Our Advisor is the one that made our templates and he just loves using 3D mouses. It will be a hassle to test out tough as most of my time is dedicated to working directly to feed the production. It seems to be something very distinct which makes it turn off because I've been working on SolidWorks for 3 hours now and it still hasn't turned off. I'm guessing it is linked to something about drawings since when I notice that it is turned off it is most of the time in a drawing.

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

We have had that problem several times and found it went away when we raised the number needed to go into large assembly mode.  We rarely need to use large assembly mode so it's not a problem.

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

I use a 3D mouse with large assembly mode almost every day and haven't had the problem since a few driver versions back. I wonder if loading the latest 3D mouse drivers would fix it?

By: Joel Gilbert  Wed, 06 Feb 2019 16:49:26 GMT
Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

I actually raised that number after Steve Calvert spoke of Large assy mode and haven't had it turn off since. I'll keep working and see if it does and report back.

Edit: It seems as if the large assembly mode toggles certain settings, depending on the number of components inside the assembly, even tough the box isn't checked(Setting is turned off)

Re: Dynamic Highlighting constantly turning off

Had Dynamic Highlight off in 3D mouse driver.

It haven't turned off for a long time.
