I'm trying to find a way to link Custom Properties to a spreadsheet without the spreadsheet being an external file (which could be moved and the link lost). I was hoping that putting an Excel file in the Design Binder would make it accessible for linking to but am not finding a way to link to it. Is it possible or is Design Binder purely for reference?

Re: Link Custom Properties to a spreadsheet in Design Binder.

I remember John Stoltzfus showing me how to link to the word document in the design binder.  I just found this Uncover the SOLIDWORKS Design Binder | CADimensions and it shows how to do it.

I can't seem to find that functionality in excel, though.

If properties are configuration specific can use design table.

Are you saying the Design Table can be filled in from cells in an Excel file in the Design Binder?

I figured out how to have the custom properties fill in the Word document in the Design Binder. I'm more interested in the way around. Having a file in the Design Binder fill in the custom properties.

Re: Link Custom Properties to a spreadsheet in Design Binder.

You are correct.  Apparently you cannot have the fields write to the custom properties from within the Word document in Design Binder.

Have you looked into Property Tab Builder?  You can make changes with it right from within SW.  If you aren't aware of this tool, it may solve all your problems:

I'll go ahead and answer for Solid Air, here.  Since he hasn't responded.  I personally don't use too many config specific properties.  But, if you do, his solution may be the best/easiest/cleanest.  Basically, you create a design table and use it instead of the Design Binder to change these Custom Properties.

Matt,

Sorry for not replying sooner.  Brian's response just posted today.  Since I have a day job, I normally only log in if I get a break, lunch or at night during the week.

Re: Link Custom Properties to a spreadsheet in Design Binder.

Brian,

To build on Matt's response for me, no I do not know of a way to populate design table cells from an excel file in the design binder (I no longer use design binder due to some bugs in it many years ago and I just quit checking to see if they were fixed).

I also did not know it was possible to have an external excel file fill in properties in the custom tab?
