So I have a cylindrical part that I am generating a drawing of that has holes around the od and I want to dimension them by just making one drawing view on the sheet a display style that shows hidden edges but I want to keep the rest of the views the same. Solidworks PLEASE allow us to break link to other drawing views in the future so I can modify one freely, this is crazy. After some searching it seems the recommendation is to create a second configuration of the part and change the display style on one of them. I have link display states to config selected but when I change the display style it changes both configurations. What am I missing here?

Re: Looking for reasonable way to change one drawing view of a part to a different display style

Below is a screenshot of a drawing I made.  Front view is parent.  Top and Left are dependent on it.  I switched the display type for each view.  Is this what you are trying to do or something else.  Could you post your drawing?

Sounds like you're missing the difference between "Display States" and "Display Styles".

The view on the left is the parent view, set to "Hidden lines removed".  The view on the right is projected from it, but the "Use parent style" checkbox has been cleared, allowing the child view to be whatever display style you want.

This is exactly what I thought was missing. Turns out it was because I was trying to change the original view that this "use parent style" box was not present. I made another view the original and projected from there so I could select it on that drawing. Thanks!

I do not think you needed to create another view.  If you change the parent view and the dependent views change then you just need to change the dependent views back to what you wanted.
