exporting text for etching

SW2017 Windows 7

I've designed a dozen or so brackets that need to have some text machined on them. We're using EZ-Cam on the shop floor.

If I make an extruded cut with font, EZ Cam creates a pocket. This adds a lot of machining time. If I change the font to OLFSimpleSansOS, a stick font, Solidworks can't extrude it, nor thin feature it. If I leave the font as just a sketch, I can't get EZ Cam to see it.

Ideas on how to either make the sketch into a 2d feature, or how to make EZ CAM see the sketch?

Thanks guys!

Hi Evelyn,

I've came across this problem before.

Create 2D sketch feature with single line font as you say. Once happy, right click and dissolve sketch text. Then export as IGES and make sure in settings that sketches are also output.

So far no dice. The sketch doesn't show up. Even if I select "export sketch entities," They don't show up in the file. I opened the igs in SW to double check, and no sketch shows up there either

It is at the assembly level.

You could make use of warp feature..

Re: exporting text for etching

After sketching the text, are you right clicking on to the text then selecting 'Dissolve Sketch Text'? This converts the text in to a series of lines and arcs, which means you can't change the text unless re entered, but should export as a sketch with the correct settings. Could you try at the part level? I have never tried this at the assembly level.

Thanks, Kyle

Re: exporting text for etching

Can you try opening the attached? Ensure that in settings > import > step/iges/acis, tick free curves and points as sketch. This works for me.  As for EZ Cam, i am not familiar with this, maybe there is a similar setting in this.

Although it brings through every sketch, the single line font also comes through.

If no success, you can try wrap feature as mentioned, or split face if it is on a flat surface, although you can't use a single line font these ways.

Re: exporting text for etching

In the attached, I created some sketch text and used that to make an extrude surface 0.005" into the face.

Using this surface, I did a cut with surface and got multiple bodies.

I don't have CAM software, so I did a save as DXF (by face) as a test, but these letter bodies didn't show up.

So it doesn't look like it worked for me, but I figure I'd share it in case it helps you (or kick starts some other path to glory).

Afterthought: Try thickening the surface a little (0.005") before the cut or use the thickened entity for a narrow extrude cut.

See the attached video:

Use the Split Line function.  Basically, it creates each letter as a separate surface.

Try it out.
