How many times do you see a great thread get trashed or hijacked for various reasons and I'll take the "Stand" and say I'm the worst for doing that.. So when I'm acting stupid tell me to trash it here, get it?? Rants - Cheers - Pet Peeves - or your Aunt Lilly, bring it.. (More then likely the dumbest thread anybody started, but I tried to keep it stupid, stupid) - The Forum Moderators rules still apply, no obscene pics, raunchy language and personal attacks, those will be reported and deleted if not changed...

(edited 9/13/2017 - Added link Request for Forum Etiquette - Added another link 9/21/2017 Forum filtering )

To Quote the Great Rick Becker.....

"When a perfectly valid and good question is asked, the thread gets a lot of great answers and some more questions. Once the questions has been answered to each persons (this includes you and me) satisfaction, we no longer need or want the discussion to continue.
We get the emails notifying us that another (and another and another and another...) post has been made and we get frustrated with the time wasting and we get snarky.

The other thing that seems to happen all too often is a post gets hijacked. The discussion moves off of the initial topic (ONE and TWO...) into many sub topics. Sometimes this happens and the initial question hasn't been totally answered."

Another Great Quote from Dennis Dohogne

"Hey, SWX guys and gals, what if we used THIS post for some of our more fun or tangential comments so we keep the other posts with more serious discussions from getting distracted/off-topic (polluted)?"

How about this from BMX'rerer Todd Blacksher

- In an effort to keep the posts somewhat on topic, and make it easy to pick out the "good information," a couple of us thought it would be a good idea to put in a water cooler. Are you completely confused? It's simple, if there is a thread where we are all helping someone find a solution, and it makes you think of something semi-related, you can say "Head over to "The Kitty Dump"

We need a good quote from Kelef Man to get it started.....

None of this matters because we still can't use a feature axis for a revolve, or anything of great substance...

Maybe, maybe not.  SWX pays close attention to ALL the ideas submitted in the TTL, without regard for where they end up on the list.  Yes, the voting does matter to some degree, but any idea with more than five votes is going to get some serious consideration, and even ones with fewer votes will get their look.  The Top Ten is somewhat of a marketing thing, but it is probably more like a Kaizen blitz where they generate a lot of ideas with a lot of shaping discussion to help make sure they are on the right track.

I remember your idea, Scott, and voted for it because I thought it would make things a good bit easier.  Even though it did not end up in the top ten in voting I would not be surprised to see it soon because it doesn't seem like it would be difficult to implement.  (That's particularly easy to say since I'm not having to do the implementation! )

I am curious what was actually in the TTL they showed this year.  I am even more curious with the rest of what was discussed during that session.  When Rick Becker and I were there last year there was considerable discussion of ONE and TWO of course, but there was great information about how they are going about the data mining to identify the causes of the problems, their heightened emphasis on "quality" (bugs), and hints about changes to the Enhancement Request system and future TTL.

I'm hoping someone that attended that Top Ten session this year starts a new thread with as much information as they can recall.

Those work as well (SW2017 SP5):

Although they have the strange property that they do not show up in the parent-child relationships:

And deleting the axis doesn't break the feature, even after a rebuild.  Only a CTRL-Q rebuild will cause a failure.

Everyone was having a great time and then we had a surprise guest who spoke with the group, making it even better.

He asked what I do for work, and then he requested I do a "Pod Cast" recording about myself / my work and what the company does

They were doing podcasts interviews in the "Partner Pavilion" in a sound proof booth that was setup for people to tell their stories and how Solidworks fits into it. (so there will be a bunch of Pod Casts coming out later in the year).

Never had a dull moment during the whole convention (as well as before and after) - lots of walking, talking, meeting people and telling stories.

Won't get too much time to post for a few days - work piled up here and orders being pulled forward and customer systems having problems and everyone wants things done or fixed by the end of the month.  It's 4:35 pm and I am finally getting my chance to go to lunch.

Where is Richard Doyle when you need him, or even Jim Wilkinson - they would at least send a message why they took a thread down, or they would lock it if it got out of hand, or just delete a message, but not often they deleted the whole post....  I know both Richard and Jim are no longer with SW, and don't want to chime in, I got that... SWIFT = SolidWorks International Forum Team

Save the Kitty Litter (Google) and Search with dogpile.com - the best search engine in town....

The reason it disappeared for a few minutes is that it blew up...  The accumulative Gas Check Valve didn't work, so the poor guy sitting on top of the Dump disappeared after he struck his match to light his Sherlock Holmes pipe, while he was writing his investigative notes for the "Post that Disappeared"  - He was all up in the air about it and fell into the Dump mire and now the poor drip and his thot has returned......

When something gets moderated, often times  it is because a forum user marks the thread as abuse through the abuse option in the forum, not because a SOLIDWORKS moderator proactively takes it down. Since that thread went away and came back, my guess is that is what happened...a user marked it as abuse, a moderator disagreed and it came back.

This is a good time to say, please do not abuse the abuse function of the forums. But if you think it may be spam or other types of abuse of the forum guidelines (profanity, etc) please do report it.

something odd happened when drawing a sketch today...I entered mm in an inch drawing as I've done for years, then I noticed a dimension was off (I know, I'm splitting hairs here), so I switched units over to from inch to mm, and lo and behold, my numbers were off! I can type them into the sketch now as 15mm, 13.1mm, and 12mm and they stay correct...I've never seen SOLIDWORKS miscalculate before-be careful!

This year was an unusual one for me on many fronts. Due to a number of concurrent events in my professional life my focus was quite different this year from the previous three. My focus this year was more on my own career and skillset, along with supporting SWUGN, EKGAR, etc. The previous three years I was concerned with absorbing as much information as I could to take back to train my team with since we had zero training budget and as a result I felt extremely mentally exhausted at the end of the week.

Without knowing the pricing models, etc. it's hard to say what effect the changes will make, but having thought about the changing focus since Monday's announcement here is my personal viewpoint:

  1. SW is, and for the foreseeable future, will continue to be an innovative 3D CAD solution whose design team is highly-responsive to users and the market
  2. DS sees SWW as having potential to connect the design and drafting process to the rest of business, which will ensure that SW continues to be an integral part of businesses' long-term plans
  3. The 3DExperience suite with their latest acquisitions has the potential to be a huge benefit for small- to medium-sized businesses in these areas:
    1. The ability to much more easily integrate SW data, including custom properties with ERP systems
    2. The opportunity to take advantage of some of the more advanced tools on a pay-per-use basis would be extremely beneficial to small teams that don't need to use simulation more than a couple times a year
    3. Sharing of information between design, sales, management, customers, shop floor, etc. could be greatly improved

My gut feeling is that there is still a lot left to be determined on the DS/SW end of things, as I don't think they know for sure how exactly it's all going to work. What is certain is that GPB and co. are excited about what's coming, and considering how well they have responded to their users' needs/wants in the continued development of SW, I am optimistic about what it means for us as CAD users.

And why 3DEXPERIENCE? Why limit this experience only to 3D, like the founders of SW limited the name to only Solid?

We got surfaces and meshes since then. Most likely the touch and smell will be added to the experience. Maybe even taste...

Why not 5SensesEXPERIENCE?

And why change the names of the programs running in the platform every year? Is like every year the old program is renamed and introduced as a new one.

And it is still the same, good for one style of product design. Many options for shape, but only one style. Not attractive, either. That remote control shown in the general session was a monster.

3DX.WORKS is a miniplatform of the whole

3DX.WORKS is a miniplatform of the whole 3DEXPERIENCE, made of 4 pieces of software: SOLIDWORKS, and 3 more. Not sure exactly if they are light versions of their parents. Maybe they should be called: DELMIAWORKS SIMULIAWORKS and ENOVIAWORKS.

DELMIA.WORKS is not really Delmia, but a completely different software just acquired by DS and renamed as such.

I got the sense that 3DX.WORKS was basically the SOLIDWORKS add-in for the platform, but I could be wrong. For that matter, they could be wrong...LOL.

My personal suggestion in the survey was to hold off on announcing products in general sessions until they are actual usable products in the SW ecosystem. It appears as though many of them are already in use as part of the 3DExperience platform but I have no way of seeing if any of that is going to be applicable or useful for my purposes.

I'm all for including this in the product testing sessions, I'd rather do two weeks worth of testing to help advance these products rather than listening to two minutes about them in a general session without knowing what in the world they will do to help me.
