Each year, makers from more than 2000 Fab Labs worldwide gather to share, collaborate, explore and fabricate together in the annual meeting (FabX) of the international fab lab network hosted by The Fab Foundation, the Center for Bits and Atoms at MIT, and a host fab lab. The venue varies from year to year around the world. In 2018, the Fab14 conference took place in Toulouse, France, while in 2019, Fab15 was hosted in Cairo and El-Gouna, Egypt. Last year, in the wake of the pandemic, the event

With the new 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS Offers, it’s true that we’re offering SOLIDWORKS designers unprecedented connection to the cloud. And, as you would likely guess, this means that your SOLIDWORKS files are generally much more accessible to you than they’d be, for example, if they were located solely on your C drive. But limiting our understanding of what ‘connecting our SOLIDWORKS design team’s workflows to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform’ means to ‘storing our design data on the cloud’ would be a

SOLIDWORKS Education is excited to invite FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC) Teams in the United States to participate in the SOLIDWORKS xChallenge 2019! The SOLIDWORKS xChallenge 2019 challenges FRC teams to become 3D Sculptors and 3D Creators, and design their own personal flying machine using xDesign and xShape on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The only criterion is that their flying machine must be for one person’s use—other than that, the sky is the limit! We want teams to get creative and have

For those of you who follow our announcements and blogs, you have likely heard about xDesign, a 3D CAD tool that runs in a browser and is developed by the SOLIDWORKS® R&D team. You may also recall that recently we announced the commercial availability of “3D Creator,” which enables parametric 3D modeling in the cloud. Confused? Let’s try to clear that up.

Earlier this month, the 3DEXPERIENCE platform received a major update, and with that came a flood of new features to SOLIDWORKS xDesign. SOLIDWORKS xDesign is a 3D parametric modeling “App” that runs completely in a web browser and is built on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. It is part of a “Role” known as 3D Creator. Introduced at SOLIDWORKS World in February xShape is the key app in the 3D Sculptor Role.

SOLIDWORKS xDesign is arguably the most hotly anticipated addition to the SOLIDWORKS portfolio for many years. It represents a paradigm shift in design and is so much more than 3D CAD. It has been shown at various stages of development at previous SOLIDWORKS Worlds but 2019 is the year it will be available commercially. But what exactly is xDesign?

Defining Dimensions in xDesign As we’ve seen, one way to define the size and relationships between sketch objects is through constraints, which allows them to be adjusted in specific ways, depending on how the geometry is updated. Adding dimensions is the other method for defining the size and relationships between sketch objects. Dimensions allow you to specify the exact size of the sketch elements by adding dimensions for linear distances, angles between lines, sizes of radii, and diameters of

Sketch Entity Relations in xDesign Here, we have a sketch in xDesign that doesn’t have any dimensions added. This sketch is intended to create a mount for a vertical rod, which would be revolved around the left edge to create the 3D geometry. Some of these sketch entities have relations that were added as the sketch was created, but we’ll want to use some additional relations to clean things up and make sure that we maintain design intent. First, we want to make sure all of the vertical and
