Every designer knows that careful attention to detail on their designs is important to ensure the manufacturing team can build the best product possible. However, in Hollywood, a lot can be done with special effects and CGI alone so what if there is no a physical manufacturing? What if they are just designing for the digital world? Should designers still be focused on details too?

The new Topology Study was launched, to the delight of many users with SOLIDWORKS 2018 and although it’s only been on the market for a few months, it is built upon tried and trusted technology from SIMULIA and many companies have been quick to take advantage of it. The topology study, part of Simulation Professional 2018, enables designers and engineers to refine components for minimum mass while maintaining the required level of stiffness (maximum displacement). The study applies linear static

SOLIDWORKS World is an amazing community of engineers, makers and scientists who are a force for change in the world. This community keeps pushing the boundaries, with no fear of complexity. It is an amazing time to be in Product Design and Engineering – it is possible to give Life to the products we design today. With sensors that can see (vision) and sense the environment (temperature, distance etc.), to adding brains with PCB and software;

Over the past thirty years, Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology has become a familiar route for validating CAD before committing to costly manufacturing tooling and processes. It may come as a surprise to some just how broadly the range of roles AM technology now plays in mechanical design and manufacturing, thanks to the swiftly changing professional desktop 3D printer ecosystem. In addition to traditional rapid prototyping, this technology now offers teams better tools for shaping initial

SOLIDWORKS is turning the spotlight on manufacturing. This year’s event will feature, for the first time, a 40 x 70 ft. “Shop Floor” booth, recreating a typical manufacturing environment for the production and inspection of an automotive gear shift arm. Parts will be manufactured and inspected from part designs produced in SOLIDWORKS 2018 complete with embedded Model Based Definition (MBD).

If there’s one lesson fans of science fiction have learned in the last month it’s that the past is gone (right Kylo?). In reality, however, the past is never gone. Surely 2017 was full of lessons learned and challenges hurdled. Unfortunately for us there are no end credits when we emerge victorious after completing a major project.
