Sal Lama and his dastardly headphones. The Magic Wheelchair build has officially had its first causality—the top of Sal Lama’s head! Was it from a machine going on the fritz? A sharp corner of foam whacking him at just the right angle after being cut off?

If you are an electrical engineer, or anyone who designs electro-mechanical products then this is the SOLIDWORKS event for you. We will spend 40 minutes (or less) discussing “What’s New” in SOLIDWORKS for electrical engineers. At SOLIDWORKS, we are very excited about this launch, as it will be focusing on electro-mechanical design. So many SOLIDWORKS users are adding smart devices into their product lines, or building new smart products all together, as customers are demanding smart products

Earlier this year, Dassault Systèmes launched a new platform called the 3DEXPERIENCE Marketplace. Billed as “the Amazon of Manufacturing,” the 3DEXPERIENCE Marketplace is split into two halves: Marketplace PartSupply, an online 3D components catalog, and Marketplace Make, a service to connect with manufacturers around the globe to make your parts via whatever process you prefer: 3D printing, CNC machining, injection molding, and more. To demonstrate what Marketplace Make has to offer, we wanted

We had the opportunity to speak with Ed Gebo after this year’s SOLIDWORKS World to discuss his role in the development of SOLIDWORKS xDesign. One Door Closes, Another Opens There is much to be said for the phrase “One door closes and another opens.” In December of 2017, I was hired as a consultant by SOLIDWORKS to help with its new product called SOLIDWORKS xDesign. When I received that initial email a few months prior, the kid who graduated many years ago from Worcester Vocational Technical

I’m sure many of you have a tried and tested way of putting a new purchase or product through its paces. Maybe it’s that run to breaking your new running shoes, riding up that hill to see how light and responsive your new bike is, or by doing “keepie uppies” to judge the ‘touch’ of your new football boots (soccer cleats). Whatever it is we all have our own performance barriers that we use every day to decide whether we give a product the time of day or we walk on by. So what does this have to do

If doctors and plane manufacturers and world-class champions can use 3D printing to become best in class, imagine how you can use this technology for your applications. You have already heard about 3D printing with plastics. What you may not know is now, you can 3D print with metal! Picture this: In one room, surgeons remove a tumor infected bone from a patient.

The fourth person we would like to profile from the SOLIDWORKS World xDesign challenge is Shawn Lesley. He shared the following with us regarding the challenge: When I first started trying to figure out what I would design for the SOLIDWORKS xDesign Challenge, I really couldn’t think of anything. The inspiration came to me as I was using a forge doing one of my hobbies, blacksmithing. Blacksmithing is something that happens all over the world, believe it or not.

I’m a programmer, an engineer, a husband and a father. I chose to focus on the “Simplify Your Life” project as clutter is always a huge issue for my wife and me. My wife is a fabulous cook and always makes great food, but there always tends to be a mess afterwards; and it’s worse anytime I try and cook.

The second person we would like to profile from the SOLIDWORKS World xDesign challenge is David Furry. He shared the following with us regarding the challenge: As long as I can remember I have been designing and building things. My dad was an engineer and I got to help with a lot of projects around the house, usually my job was to stay out of the way and watch and learn. We designed and built Pinewood Derby cars for five years running and won a lot of trophies.

The stereotypical intern seems to do menial work such as, get coffee and doughnuts for the rest of the company, go down the hallway to collect reports from the printer, or even clean up messes that they didn’t make. Additive Manufacturing or 3D Printing has had a huge amount of hype in the last few years and in many cases has not lived up to expectation. This is because it is not a miracle manufacturing method for making anything and everything, but a different way of making things that has reached a maturity where for certain applications it is commercially viable. However, as with all manufacturing methods, design for manufacture is crucial. Understanding how that method works is key to that.
