This year’s SAE AERO Design West competition took place in the heart of the USA, nestled right in Fort Worth Texas. Students from all around the world and from different walks of life, filled the hotel lobby with propellers, DC motors, and aerodynamic fuselages, as they marched their planes in and out of the judges’ arena. Day 1 of the event was all about technical qualifications. A warm Texas morning welcomed the teams to the Thunderbird Field that hosted the Day 2’s agenda: Flight.

My partners and I at Ten80 Education, like most of you, are wrapping up the school year and preparing for summer camps and clubs. Ten80StudentRacingChallenge_WindTurbine Many students design cars – all types of cars, but how many teams design the actual sustainable power source? Student from the RC Lions team at R.L. Turner High (M.E.T.S.A) in Carrollton, TX presented the wind turbine they designed and built to charge their electric RC car at the Ten80 finals. I first met the Ten80 team of engineers and educators five years ago. The term “STEM Education” was just working its way into the US education system.
