This year’s SAE AERO Design West competition took place in the heart of the USA, nestled right in Fort Worth Texas. Students from all around the world and from different walks of life, filled the hotel lobby with propellers, DC motors, and aerodynamic fuselages, as they marched their planes in and out of the judges’ arena.

Egypt’s Masoura University Formula Student racing team, under the direction of faculty mentor, Dr Mohammed Awad, use their engineering skills both in and out of the classroom to compete on a world-wide stage. In their senior capstone design project, students not only analyzed their vehicle’s engine, with SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation, but also learned from these CFD results to improve design through iterations and to successfully compete as a Formula Student racing team.

SOLIDWORKS Japan continues to share in student success with Formula SAE Japan, FSAE. Last December, SOLIDWORKS Japan hosted SOLIDWORKS CAD and SOLIDWORKS Simulation workshops for students featuring professional automotive engineers. The positive results can be seen in this years’ competition.

Last week I found myself Wenceslaus Square, city center of Prague, Czech Republic. The Velvet Revolution of November/December 1989 created a new country with students ready to compete on a global stage. The Northern Illinois University (NIU) College of Engineering and Engineering Technology has strong competitive, Society of Automotive and Aerospace Engineering teams in FSAE, BAJA, Clean Snowmobile, Aero Design and Supermileage. The NIU Supermileage Team competes in the Shell Eco-marathon, a global program that challenges high school and college student teams to design, build and test the most energy-efficient vehicles. NIU Supermileage Team helped promote the Shell Eco-marathon Americas Event

The University of Arizona BAJA SAE Engineering Design team has been selected to be at SOLIDWORKS WORLD Product Showcase this year. Each year the UA BAJA Racing team members design, build and race a custom single-seat off-road race car. They start by designing the car in SOLIDWORKS.

Congratulations to all the student teams that competed in Formula SAE Japan last week! The FSAE event brings together engineering students to compete in static events such as design presentation and cost reporting and dynamic events such as endurance and acceleration. This year students used SOLIDWORKS and SOLIDWORKS SIMULATION as necessary software tools to complete at a world-class level.

University of Texas – Arlington (UT-Arlington) hosted the 14th annual “Texas Autocross Weekend” July 11 – 13, 2014, under the direction of Dr. Bob Woods. The original intent was for Texas and Oklahoma schools to get together, but the event has grown to be a North American event to observe cars in a more relaxed setting than the high pressure competitive FSAE race events at Michigan Speedway and Lincoln, Nebraska.
