I received a .STEP file of a machine from a customer. One of the sub assemblies had a really long filename. Apparently the long filename and the addition of my path to where I keep my CAD data on a Gbit network storage server (i.e. Z:/customer name/job number/CAD Data/really long compound German word containing filename.SLDASM) is too much for Win7 64bit to accept. When I choose save I get an error "An Unnamed File Contains an Invalid Path" when I try to save the Solidworks assembly.

Been away from solidworks for a while. Currently using V2012 SW. Now, as I recall in V2009/10 I had no problems directly copying and pasting a group of lines/sketches directly from Autocad to Solidworks, it was extremely convenient. Now, its impossible, what happened?

Hello, I'd like to be able to import an rfa model - which I believe is a 3D model type used by Revit for library items - into SW. I know that Revit can export a .sat file, but of course I don't have Revit.

Hi all, Looking for a system to do the following: I get architectural drawing from two different consultants. I have found the best way to add information to SWKS is to use "sketch picture" works most of the time. I now have received two different scaled PDFs. I did sketch picture twice, matched up data points. ( RCP, Reflected Ceiling Plan & Scaled Layout from Lighting Designer) One sketch #3 Scaled Layout is in color when active, which is the one I want to work off of.

I'm trying to bring in a .dwg topo map into SW. It's successful to bring it in as contour lines ("imported curves" in the SW tree). During import, there is an option (screenshot below) to import 3d face entities or skip them, so it appears there are surfaces in the native file. The attached SW file is the result of skipping the 3d faces.

is it possible to extract the fibre orientation information of a user-defined position? In Particular, i need the values of the second- order orientation tensor (a11,a22, a33) as a function of the thickness. Is there a way to export this data in ASCII?

I have drawn multi bodies in a single file and then separated the drawn parts each in a file after that i tried to convert each single body in to parasolid extension but it tells me (( the file could't be saved because the parts geometry is not valid for this type of save operation )) and when i try to save it as IGES it does nothing and no files is made , how can i fix this ?? I do not see any reason for it but any chance those are surface bodies?

We have an assembly that consists of more than 4000 parts. When its put into a drawing and exported out on a few sheets (2-6) which is a building layout for a customer the file size is huge. Average size is around 14 MB. That size of file is not easily emailed.

My company uses Microsoft Word and Excel for internal documents that support the shop floor. We also have to have our quality department put a signature of approval on each document before released. In order for us to insert drawings, we have been using screen shots of our SolidWorks Drawings saved as .JPG files and then inserting them into the Word or Excel documents. However, we loose quality in the drawings and I want to know the best way to do this keeping the drawing integrity.

Here is a free macro, suitable for SW2005 and up, to export your models in Alias|Wavefront .obj format complete with .mtl and textures. The macro works with parts and assemblies and configurations.

Can we open "Staad pro" software file into SolidWorks? No, native staad files are not supported by Solidworks but you can export data from Staad in any of the common file formats like .x_t, iges, STL etc. for importing into Solidworks.

I have a copy of the Student edition of Solidworks 2016 SP2. I'm having an issue with Solidworks automatically HEAVILY reducing the resolution on the import of polygonized mesh geometry, specifically STL files. I previously used the 2015 Student edition and had zero problems with this - if the file had too many triangles Solidworks would simply crash.

When I export to .DXF from Soliworks my curves are being converted to a series of short line segments. I am trying to create a program to cut out text for a sign using CNC Plasma cutter. The only file type the machine accepts is DXF. The line segments show up on the cut metal and make for a really ugly cut.

I have a step file that I know contains multiple parts as well as points in a 3D sketch. When I open the step file in SolidWorks I can see the parts but the 3D sketch and points are not there. How can I get SolidWorks to recognize the 3D points? I know the 3D points are in the step file because a coworker can open them in AutoDesk Inventor.
