Hernan Malleret, an industrial designer from Buenos Aires in Argentina, is a self taught SOLIDWORKS user. He started using the software in 1997 and was able to self-learn the program because of its user-friendly interface he says. Starting with designing plastic pieces, Hernan discovered how SOLIDWORKS allowed him to develop his work in a more precise manner. “It is very intuitive”, he tells us.

Apps for Kids inspires young thinkers to turn their wildest creations into reality. On November 11th, 24 children from ages 10 to 13 years gathered at the training center, at SOLIDWORKS Waltham Campus. They had been invited to use the beta version of Shape It and Mech It features of SOLIDWORK’s new Apps for Kids, and share their feedback.

Erin Winick, Founder and CEO of Sci Chic, talked to SOLIDWORKS about her startup business, where she creates and sells 3D printed science and engineering inspired jewelry made of plastics and/or metals. Erin will be graduating this December from the University of Florida with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. She has had 4 internships, namely – Bracken Engineering, Solar Turbines, John Deere and Keysight Technologies. Originally from Tampa, Florida, Erin always enjoyed fashion and science.

When Nitzan Kish was learning to sew from her grandmother, she learned far more than the skills behind sewing straight lines and making flowers from cloth. Nitzan’s grandmother was a Holocaust survivor and in fact taught her granddaughter that she survived thanks to sewing. She taught Nitzan to sew and to cut patterns from Burda, but most of all she believed in her granddaughter and gave her the freedom to be who she is today. .

This weekend, some very talented women engineers will be hosting the event, Make your own Wearables for high school girls at MIT Lincoln Labs in Lincoln, MA. The “Make your own wearables” workshop for high school girls is an introduction to engineering through wearable technology. The full day workshop hosted by MIT Lincoln Laboratory on Saturday December 13th consists of two major hands-on projects in manufacturing and wearable electronics.

The Big Bridge. If you are creating a freshman engineering experience or a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) lesson with brainstorming, designing, testing, redesigning, hands-on building and ofcourse making certain students and instructors have fun, then the Big Bridge could be your next project. The Big Bridge project, developed by Richard “Corporal Willy” Williams was center stage at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, last month, when groups of boys and girls built the Big Bridge.

On Saturday, DS SolidWorks engineers Vajrang, John, Even, Jie, Lin, Roberto and Bonny celebrated Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) with 250 children at the Boys and Girls Club of Leominster/Fitchburg Massachusetts. The event attracted children, ages preschool to high school, from as far away as Connecticut. The SolidWorks engineers introduced SolidWorks, SolidWorks Simulation, eDrawings on an iPad and 3D Printing concepts to children and their parents.
