SolidWorks 2014 SP4

EPDM 2014 SP1

From what I have read EPDM allows users to select/view different BOM (computed, named, SolidWorks) and different BOM column layouts (using the admin tool to create a BOM layout for purchasing, and another for engineering).  To select a different BOM (named, computed, SolidWorks) or BOM layout an individual selects the "Bill of Materials" tab, then click the "BOM Type" selection box and select the BOM you wish to view.

I have created an assembly and inserted a BOM table into the assembly (insert-->tables-->BOM) saved and checked-in the assembly.  When I select the assembly inside EPDM and navigate to the Bills of Materials tab I am only given one BOM type to select from (I assume this is the standard computed BOM).  I have no options to select computed, or SolidWorks, or even a different BOM column layout type.

Is there a setting or step within SoildWorks or EPDM I am missing that would allow users to view SolidWorks assembly BOM from EPDM?

P.S. Maybe a simpler explanation.  I am trying to view the SolidWorks BOM within EPDM following these instructions - 2014 SOLIDWORKS Enterprise PDM Help - Bill of Materials Tab - SOLIDWORKS BOM .  When I select an assembly with a BOM table I am only given one option under view selection (I assume computed BOM), the SolidWorks BOM option is not displayed.

Re: Missing BOM selection options in EPDM

Hi Donald, to view different types of BOMs, you have to create a BOM column set in the EPDM Admin tool. Define the columns you want (Desc, rev etc), then assign who is allowed to see it. If you create multiple BOM column sets, then you should have corresponding options to select BOM types in EPDM vault view.

Thanks

Re: Missing BOM selection options in EPDM

Hello,

1. Please check if you have set the Group Folder permission where there are options for viewing different types of BOM.

2. In EPDM Administration ,inside your vault there is an option of Bill of Material, check if you have given user permission for all types of BOM.

Re: Missing BOM selection options in EPDM

Thank you for the info.  I do have a BOM column set created, and permissions set to view as outlined above, yet I am still not able to see the SolidWorks assembly BOM option.  Below are some screen shots I hope will help clarify my question.  Am I understanding the EPDM BOM tab correctly?  I should be able to view computed BOM columns, item BOM columns, and SolidWorks BOM from EPDM explorer.

Re: Missing BOM selection options in EPDM

For what it's worth - I do see the option to switch to the SolidWorks BOM.  Just like the Help page you linked. I have not tried with an sldasm - but in EPDM BOM tab it works for me for a drawing with a BOM.  I didn't have to create another EPDM BOM set as mentioned above. It simply shows the same columns we show inside SolidWorks.

Yes, you should.  It should look like this:

There are 3 types if BOMs in EPDM:  computed, named and derived.  The SW BOM  is a derived BOM.  None of the permissions or settings for named or computed BOMs should have any effect on derived BOMs

If you create a brand new assembly with one or two brand new parts in it do you have the same problem?

Re: Missing BOM selection options in EPDM

Just tested a few new assemblies and now I am even more confused hahaha.  Each assembly I checked out, inserted a BOM table, then checked back in.

#1 New assembly with new parts (2 parts) - Derived BOM showed up in EPDM.

#2 Older assembly with mix of old/new parts (5 parts and 1 sub assembly with 3 parts) - Derived BOM showed up in EPDM.

#3 Older assembly with mix of old/new parts with multiple sub-assemblies (large assembly) - Derived BOM does NOT show up in EPDM.

The only difference I can tell between assemblies #2 and #3 are:

#3 has significantly more parts than #2

#3 has multiple configurations where #2 only has the default.  Note that for #3 I did add the BOM to the default configuration, and in EPDM I reviewed each BOM configuration, but the derived BOM was not visible on any of the assembly configurations.

Any thoughts why larger or multi-configuration assemblies would be giving me trouble?

Re: Missing BOM selection options in EPDM

Just to make sure, if you are testing and simply copying an assembly (w/drawing) into the vault it may not work right away.  It seems that you have to check out the model and drawing, make a changes to both, save them and check them back in.  Then I see the SolidWorks BOM for the drawing and model.

Re: Missing BOM selection options in EPDM

I tried a few more scenarios with mixed results.

Assembly #1 only have a few parts and no drawing: Derived BOM showed up

Assembly #2 Med sized assembly with drawing.  Only opened the assembly and added BOM table: Derived BOM showed up

Here is where it gets odd.  I started at the bottom of a large assembly and slowly worked up testing to see where the derived BOM stopped working.

Assembly #5

     --> Assembly #4

          --> Assembly #3

Assembly #3 had a drawing.  I only opened up the assembly and added BOM table: Derived BOM showed up

Assembly #4 had a drawing.  Only opened up the assembly and added BOM table: derived BOM showed up

Assembly #5 had a drawing.  Opened up both assembly and drawing, updated both, added BOM table to assembly:  derived BOM did not show up for the assembly, but derived BOM showed up in drawing.

No matter how many times I updated #5 assembly & drawing in different orders (assembly then drawing, drawing then assembly).  The derived BOM did not show up for the assembly.

Re: Missing BOM selection options in EPDM

I assume you did but I'll ask anyway, did you insert a BOM into the assembly model?

I've only tested it one assembly level deep and it seems to work fine.  I'll have to test in scenario you indicated above and see what I get for results.

Re: Missing BOM selection options in EPDM

Yes each assembly did have a BOM table inserted into it as well as the prints.

Not sure if this has anything to do with the issue, but I did noticed that assemblies that showed a derived BOM in EPDM would continue to show that BOM even after I deleted the BOM table from the assembly.  It seemed that inserting a BOM into an assembly was the trigger for EPDM to start displaying the BOM.

Re: Missing BOM selection options in EPDM

Ping on this - we're on SW2017, and I'm having the same issue.  A user with all the relevant permissions is getting the 'Please create at least one bill of materials type column set before using this function.  Column sets can be set up in the Administration tool.", and I can't figure out why some groups have access, and others don't.

check the permissions for the BOM in the admin tool.

Yes, those correspond to the ones in my second picture.

Still happening in 2018 too.

Re: Missing BOM selection options in EPDM

Elisabeth, can you see whether selecting "Show working versions of files" for that person helps?

Re: Missing BOM selection options in EPDM

Hi Prasad, thanks, good suggestion, but they already had that permission.
