Hi,

I'm running SolidWorks 2012, after upgrading from 2011. I often get the message below; it may only be when I select "Configure Feature," but perhaps there are other times.

Can anyone help me resolve this issue?

(Text to facilitate internet searches: The properties.txt file cannot be located at the specified location... The SolidWorks software will use the properties.txt file located at <install_dir>\lang\...)

Re: Setting the location of the properties.txt file?

Hi Chris.

Please copy an existing file (from another user station) / create a file called properties.txt to this directory

Re: Setting the location of the properties.txt file?

Thanks.

Just out of interest, this can be edited, right? I'm writing some in-house software that adds custom properties to all our parts, and there are some duplicate names that can cause confusion.

Re: Setting the location of the properties.txt file?

Hi Chris.

Yes these are just the defaults that come with SW, but can be edited at any time.

Also note that these properties are not evaluated properties. They are simply the list that comes up when clicking file -> Properties -> and then when you create a new property a list pops up

Re: Setting the location of the properties.txt file?

Chris,

You can use "Property Tab Builder" to get all these properties. It is possible to make properties for Part, Assembly and drawing

More options and convenient. It is readily available in your task Pane

Re: Setting the location of the properties.txt file?

Hi John.

Just a minor correction. Even though the property tab builder is a great front end for the custom properties, SolidWorks will still start with the above error message unless the properties.txt file exists in the specified location. IF the file is found (even without any content inside), no error.

These same properties are the ones listed when adding a text box to the property tab builder and selecting a property option on the right hand side

Re: Setting the location of the properties.txt file?

Andries,

I was just mentioning about the convenience of PTB compared to pulling the file properties menu.

I also noticed that I don't have a "properties.txt" anywhere in my computer and not getting any warning.

My SW is completely depends on PTB and it works fine.It is populating the details from mdb/xls file

Re: Setting the location of the properties.txt file?

Hi John..

Sure I understand. Most likely you do have the properties.txt file hidden somewhere in your %programdata% folder and doing a normal search for it will not find it, otherwise you would be getting the error too.

Re: Setting the location of the properties.txt file?

I'm getting this after upgrading from SolidWorks 2017 to 2018, and decided today to get rid of it.

There is a sound looking file in C:\ProgramData\SolidWorks\SolidWorks 2018\lang\english, but for some reason the software tries to open an earlier version, which does not exist:

config-2017.JPG

I'm fine with this. If only SW 2018 would remember the change, but the dialog keeps coming up with configuration-related workflow too often.

How to change the reference at the source?

Solution: Found under registry key "...\SOLIDWORKS 2018\ExtReferences" an entry "Custom Property Folders" that had 2017 in its filename.
