Mirror surface and extruded shape?

Hi guys i'm trying to mirror this part but getting the errors attached in the screenshot. I'm trying to mirror a part that consists of an uploaded mesh part from a 3D scan, surface created through surface wizard, then filled in the hollow part using convert entities and extruded boss.

Just need the job flipped so i have a right and left, thanks

Re: Mirror surface and extruded shape?

Did you try as the message suggested to use a geometry pattern?

Re: Mirror surface and extruded shape?

Yes sorry it just said failed after i tried that. I wasn't sure if it just ment tick the geometry pattern box, which i did but didn't work, thanks

Re: Mirror surface and extruded shape?

Try the Bodies to mirror instead that should solve the problem.

Re: Mirror surface and extruded shape?

So it lets me mirror the job so there connected but it won't let me mirror it unconnected to the original. Do you think there's anyway i can mirror it away from the original so it's its own part? Thanks

Hi Oliver,

When you say

Do you want to be able to save it as a totally separate .sldprt?

Or do you just want to move it away from any part it is touching?

Dave.

Re: Mirror surface and extruded shape?

I want to mill the right and left as separate parts, so yeah I think maybe saving it separately would be the best option if possible. If not I'll just machine them connected then cut it down the middle as its only MDF, but rather not. Thanks a lot

Re: Mirror surface and extruded shape?

Weird, I had no problems mirroring the part with geometry pattern checked?

Also if you want to mirror them into two bodies uncheck Merge Solids (or am I missing something here???)

Re: Mirror surface and extruded shape?

I've used this in the past with great success 2016 SOLIDWORKS Help - Creating Opposite-Hand Versions of Parts

Just be sure to break all links if you want it to be a totally independent part!

Re: Mirror surface and extruded shape?

Is there anyway of saving the left and right individually as parts after mirroring? Thanks

Re: Mirror surface and extruded shape?

You can do a FileAs then delete the first body.  Then in the original file, delete everything you have done.  That's the harder way.

My preferred way is to select the face I want to mirror about then go to Insert, Mirror Part...  Depending on your preference you can break link to original part or not.  I prefer to break the link then create a second config then in the original config suppress the body-move copy feature so I have both hands in the same model.  This way I have a better chance of keeping both hands the same if I decide to make changes.  I then file the new model over the old part.
