As a rule, in our BOM the QTY (quantity) equals how many of a part/assembly are included/inserted in an assembly.

We've recently come across a couple situations where we need to  override that number for a particular item.

As an example, we have Screw X and we want the quantity to equal 100.

Is there a way to get a manually entered QTY to show in the BOM for only one specific item when the BOM has many lines?

For all the other items I want the QTY to equal the total in the assembly.

It's like I need only 1 line in my BOM to read a Custom Property for this one item.

If this do-able?

Is there a different methodology for accomplishing this?

I really want to avoid inserting 100 instances of this one screw in my top assembly, even if it's a pattern. (If possible)

Solidworks 2015 (if that matters)

Please Advise

Thanks

Re: BOM Cheat / Override for a single line item?

Hi Patrick:

I think you can double-click the cell and edit the value manually.

You will see this, but if you click Yes, then you can overwrite the value.

Re: BOM Cheat / Override for a single line item?

Thanks...

BUT, is it possible to get that one cell to read a Custom Property field that is set?

To avoid manually typing (or mistyping) or picking the wrong line, etc..

Re: BOM Cheat / Override for a single line item?

I think you can not force one cell to read from customer property while other cells are using the calculated value.

Re: BOM Cheat / Override for a single line item?

Hi Patrick,

Add two columns in your BOM. Say QTY_OVERRIDE &  QTY_AR. In any line item you want to show the bulk qty add the number 100 for instance. Then simply add an if statement equation in the OVERRIDE column.

Logic statement: If AR="" then QTY else AR

That will show the value 100 (or whatever value you entered) or show the true quantity if it is blank. Check out BOM equations in the help file.

Then Hide the columns you don't want to show.

Re: BOM Cheat / Override for a single line item?

Does that part always have a particular quantity? If so, use the BOM quantity from the custom properties.

Add a property (I used QTY) and fill in a number value:

Change the BOM quantity pull down to the property name:

Mostly, I have used this for things such as adhesives or grease.

Hope this helps.

I'll check this one out too...

Re: BOM Cheat / Override for a single line item?

I'm reading the help but don't understand how the syntax should be formatted:

I'm selecting EQUATION

I've tried these:

If QTY1="" then QTY else QTY1

IF(`QTY1`)= " " then  (`QTY`) else (`QTY1`)

but all it does is show the formula in the cell.

I claim novice, nubie...

Help!

Re: BOM Cheat / Override for a single line item?

Hi,Carrie,I read about this on this forum,in the help, tried to do,but unfortunately without success (SWX18). Does this feature works in SWX18?

I tried with whole numbers (not with text like AR).

Re: BOM Cheat / Override for a single line item?

Eq. Column F if column QTY_MANUAL is not linked to custom property

=IF('QTY_MANUAL'<>"";'QTY_MANUAL';'QTY.')

Eq. Column F if column QTY_MANUAL is linked to custom property in model

=IF(`QTY_MANUAL`<>"";`QTY_MANUAL`;'QTY.')

Patrick and Igor,

I think that custom BOM quantity is the easiest way to go, but I am pretty certain that it is a Configuration Specific Property.  It has been available for quite a long time, and it does work in 2018.

Add a new Custom Property - call it CustomQTY or anything that suits you.  Add the Value of 100.

Then pick CustomQTY from the dropdown BOM quantity list.  Hit OK, then go check your BOM.

Remember that it's a multiplier - one instance of that part will show Qty = 100 on your BOM.

Two instances will cause it to multiply to 200, etc. and so on.  Want some fun?  Try fractional custom quantities!

There is a drawback, however.   If you are using a part that resides in your Library of Commercial/Standard parts, then it is probably read only and you can't modify/create new Custom Properties.  You would need to make a copy of the part first. If you don't, then that CustomQTY will affect every assembly it is used in.

Another consideration: Qty. is a property that is "owned" by SWx.  It would be best to avoid using a custom quantity based on a propertty called "Qty." or "Qty" or "QTY" etc.

Re: BOM Cheat / Override for a single line item?

Igor,

1. Try using Configuration Specific properties for your custom quantity.

2. I am not able to open a RAR file.

3. Yes, there is a difference between Cut-Lists from version to version, but I don't know how this applies to custom quantity for a fastener. Sorry.

Re: BOM Cheat / Override for a single line item?

Thanks, I`ve made a new assy and have repeated all steps and it works right, but only with new parts (SWX18).

My assy from SWX16 with wrong Qty is attached.

It is strange but there is difference between old file (SWX16) cut-list properties and new file cut-list properties.I think it could be the reason for this issue.

Re: BOM Cheat / Override for a single line item?

I`ve changed archive format to zip (Win) , your workaround with config specific tab has helped.

Igor,

  1. I'll take a look at your asm.
  2. I don't think this is a workaround.  I think that custom quantities only works with Config Specific Properties.  The Help file says not, but that's the only way it works for us.  I would be interested to hear a more definitive answer.
  3. Glad to hear that it is working for you.
