Hi,

I can't open the 3D model from McMaster-Carr because I older version of SW.  I selected the step file but don't know how to save Parasolid (*.x_t) file to part file.  There is no options for me to choose.  Thank you

Re: How to save Parasolid file to part file?

Instead of Export choice Save As option.

Your file will be saved as SW file automatically

Chika,.. what you said is confusing..  so, the STEP from McMaster imported or not?... otherwise, I think you mean you want to "import" a Parasolid?

Re: How to save Parasolid file to part file?

When I open the step file its format is parasolid.  In order to use this part I need to save it to part file right?  Thanks

I don't know if the STEP is imported.  The link below directs you to the part.

Re: How to save Parasolid file to part file?

File > Open, then select the appropriate file type to open.

or just drag the file into your SolidWorks graphics area without any other files open.

After that you can do a File > Save to save it as a SolidWorks file.  Then you can delete the file you downloaded from McMaster, now that you have a SolidWorks version of it.

Download a step file from McMaster if the parasolid will not open for you.

Re: How to save Parasolid file to part file?

..it will not import directly thru McMaster-Carr,.. the step file "96415A110_PUSH NUTS FOR UNTHRD SHAFTS.STEP" will download to the folder you choose... and per what Anna suggest, you should be able to open or drag-drop the STEP into SW.. and/also saveas a parasolid.   (file attached)

Re: How to save Parasolid file to part file?

I'll take a shot at this.  Chika, I think what you are saying is that when you import a STEP file, it comes in as a "dumb" solid with no features.  You want to know how to import a STEP and have features like a built from scratch SolidWorks model?  The truth is you don't.   There are tools to manipulate the geometry once you get it in, but you won't get features from an imported STEP.

There is also FeatureWorks.   This is a program that in some cases can transform a dumb solid into a part with features.  2017 SOLIDWORKS Help - FeatureWorks

You can in some cases download a SolidWorks file from McMaster.

Lastly and what most of us would recommend is if you are downloading a purchased part, it's should stay a dumb solid.   It's better for use in assemblies as it is lighter weight.  Also, the purchased part shouldn't need to be changed in size and shape so a dumb solid is perfect.

Hope this helps.

Re: How to save Parasolid file to part file?

Download the file, save it on your computer.  Run Solidworks, click on file, open, select your file.  SW will ask you to choose a file template.  Pick one from the list.  SW will probably open the Import Diagnostics window.  Click on the green check mark.  Select File, Save, give it a file name.  The part will be saved as a Solidworks file with the name and location that you gave it.

Is that what you're after?

Re: How to save Parasolid file to part file?

Ken,

I found the solution!  I found a thread in the Forum. I downloaded again. This time I chose STEP file.  Open it in my SW, run diagnostic and save it.  When I reopen it is a part file now.  Thank you all!
