How many times do you see a great thread get trashed or hijacked for various reasons and I'll take the "Stand" and say I'm the worst for doing that..  So when I'm acting stupid tell me to trash it here, get it?? Rants - Cheers - Pet Peeves - or your Aunt Lilly, bring it..  (More then likely the dumbest thread anybody started, but I tried to keep it stupid, stupid) - The Forum Moderators rules still apply, no obscene pics, raunchy language and personal attacks, those will be reported and deleted if not changed...

(edited 9/13/2017 - Added link Request for Forum Etiquette - Added another link 9/21/2017 Forum filtering )

To Quote the Great Rick Becker.....

"When a perfectly valid and good question is asked, the thread gets a lot of great answers and some more questions. Once the questions has been answered to each persons (this includes you and me) satisfaction, we no longer need or want the discussion to continue.
We get the emails notifying us that another (and another and another and another...) post has been made and we get frustrated with the time wasting and we get snarky.

The other thing that seems to happen all too often is a post gets hijacked. The discussion moves off of the initial topic (ONE and TWO...) into many sub topics. Sometimes this happens and the initial question hasn't been totally answered."

Another Great Quote from Dennis Dohogne

"Hey, SWX guys and gals, what if we used THIS post for some of our more fun or tangential comments so we keep the other posts with more serious discussions from getting distracted/off-topic (polluted)?"

How about this from BMX'rerer Todd Blacksher

- In an effort to keep the posts somewhat on topic, and make it easy to pick out the "good information," a couple of us thought it would be a good idea to put in a water cooler. Are you completely confused? It's simple, if there is a thread where we are all helping someone find a solution, and it makes you think of something semi-related, you can say "Head over to "The Kitty Dump"

We need a good quote from Kelef Man to get it started.....

Yeah, sports is a deal breaker for a lot of people.  But, if all you need is OTA news you can use the Tablo DVR I mentioned above.  We watch the local news in the morning, mainly to get the weather and to see if there are any wrecks on the Interstate.

I agree with the cord cutting discussion. Keeping it for live sporting events is important but it's also important for live news and financial news. We tried to cut the cord twice, but getting this stuff online is cumbersome at best, and it's usually late. Convinced we should cut the cord our provider came back with some really great deals to keep us, perhaps because we have it bundled with our cell phone service. CSS

You should have seen the deal my ma got when she called DTV to shut them off.  Any time you call them and tell them your not happy and that you want to cancel service they will get really nice and try to give you something to stay with them.

My wife worked for AT&T with customer retention for a while and learned something very important:

It pays to occasionally call your provider (cell or cable) and let them know you are leaving. They all have special customer retention deals that can save you quite a chunk of change.

The one thing that really gets me with most carriers is that they tend to forget who is there for them month in and month out.  they offer everything to get a new customer instead of saying that they are going to give a new car to one or 10 of our customers that have been with us over 20 years....

Yup, ATT is our company too and DirecTV apparently does not like losing customers.  We got such a good deal that I am reluctant to mention it... for fear of losing it.  As you mentioned, often times its worth a phone call.

I hope your local news is better than ours.  Where we live out in the boonies - over the air brings us only the Yakima news which is depressing and boring.  Even from Seattle - the morning news script is the same every day: Starts with a short weather blurb to get you roped in, then on to news from the city, county or state on actions for solving traffic, school, housing or political issues (because nothing gets solved they are a permanent part of the script), an overnight house fire, accident or police action that they manage to get some video for (the other ones get ignored), some dramatic national or world event (with video of course), then on to traffic (at 6am there are more red lines than a blood shot eye), and finally the weather (surprise... rain... again) - REPEAT.

In our corner of the nation, you can pick a random morning news show from the last few years and replay it for today's news... no one will notice.

Yes, they key is to say the words "cancelling service".   If you don't actually say "cancelling service", then they are directed to politely ignore you.   Once you say the magic words, they send you to person who has the authority to make the deals.   the first person you talk to is the bouncer.....designed yo politely get you to hang up the phone.

Y'all obviously don't understand the concept of breakfast.  For me it will be a breakfast taco, like always.  The big question is "What kind of breakfast taco?"  Today I had sausage and eggs.  The place I get them has a mixture of eggs, potatoes, peppers, and bacon.  Maybe tomorrow I'll get that, mixed with beef fajita, red pork, or maybe barbacoa.  With beans.  Always with beans.

I lift 12 fluid oz. weights, which decrease their weight with each rep. I also walk to the fridge to get a new weight when the previous expires.

Recycling is involved. I bring a bin to the curb once a week.

Procurement of weights is more strenuous, as they come in 6, 12, and 24 unit increments.

I raised it to $5.50..  and, she said, "ok,.. but, you're worth more than that..".     I said, "Thanks!.. it may well be below the min husband wage,..  but I think the $5.50 gives me some negotiation power... and that makes me feel (or gives me the illusion) I'm somehow useful or maybe in control,.. a little?.. A politician, a guru and a CAD Drafter were sitting together on an Airbus

plane when the Pilot comes over the PA to announce that the Airbus

A380 is going to make a crash landing short of the runway.

"Think of the children! I'm going to call the Transportation Oversight

Committee and demand that all A380 planes are banned because of

this," says the politician.

"As soon as we hit the ground I'll be transfering to a different plane of

existance," says the guru.

"Don't wory, I got this. I'll just reset our coordinate system so that our origin is

coincident with the plane's center of mass," said the Drafter.

Overhearing this exchange, an engineer sitting across the aisle remarks,

"Forget it. By the time we get the ECO issued we'll be on the ground."

I have been on a diet for so long now that it is crazy.  not a diet to loose any weight but if I am gong to eat we need to bring back the good old siesta.  A few hours after lunch to take a nap or take care of things then come back and finish out the day.  I started finding my self falling asleep at the computer after a nice decent lunch and decided that is enough of that...I can wait a few hours till I get home.

IF your Design Just Isn't Working

One thing to try in your parts and assemblies is to edit the point of origin, by right clicking and selecting edit, if that is missing and doesn’t work there could be a SW point of origin bug.  Then you should check the Knowledge Base by logging into the customer portal and typing in Point of Origin – Edit -  There could be up to a few thousand entries listed, so forward till you get to around page 501 and start watching the list closely, the SPT listed could be between the 501st page and around 700 something.  Once you find the proper SPT – follow the instructions to change the registry keys in the .dll and viola everything will be so fine.

Any of David Weber's.

Almost any of John Ringo's. His Paladin of Shadows series is more porn than sci-fi, and I don't know anything about his Black Tide Rising series, so can't say yes or no on it, but his others are all pretty good.

That's not steak.

As they say, put lipstick on a pig, and it's still a pig.

Re: The "Kitty Dump" - Watercooler - Trash it Here - Food For Thought - Or Whatever else floats your boat ;)

Asimov is one of my favorites.  His work is the closest classic Sci-Fi I'm aware of.  Most mix too much fantasy or human interaction.  Heilein is great, too, but he does focus more on the human side (and he got really weird in his later life, we'll see how the Stranger in a Strange Land movie turns out).  Orson Scott Card is hit or miss.  Some of his stories really drag on.

I listen to anything I can get my hands on from Scalzi as soon as it comes out.  A lot of it is read by Will Wheaton, who isn't my favorite narrator.  But, he is darned good.  Okay here's a quick list of the series I listened to recently in order of preference:

Scalzi     Old Man's War

James S.A. Corey     The Expanse

Craig Alanson     Expeditionary Force

Dennis E. Taylor      Bobiverse

Stephen Moss     Fear Saga

Jeff VanderMeer Southern Reach Trilogy (They are making Annihilation into a movie with Natalie Portman.  But, these books are more horror and weird than Sci-Fi...And really just dark and gloomy.  So, at the bottom of the list.)

If you like spy novel types, Vince Flynn is at the top of my list.  His Mitch Rapp character is better than Ben Coes' Dewey Andreas, Brad Thor's Scot Harvath, Nelson Demille's John Corey, Mark Greaney's Gray Man, and I'm kind of new to Baldacci's world.  We'll have to see how that goes.

I really need to get ahold of the movie American Assassin, Michael Keaton playing Mitch Rapp's mentor is a perfect fit. Though the guy they picked for Mitch doesn't see right.  I guess I'll see.

I had a friend recommend I start in the actual order the books took place, not their publish date.  I read a few of them and I put it down and forgot where I was at.  I downloaded the first one and started it again but I got onto something else.  I may have to revisit Foundation.  It was an amazing concept.  They set up an entire world, Foundation, outside the collapsing empire to maintain technology that gets lost by the worlds inside the empire due to the collapse.  All because Hari Seldon sees it coming through psychohistory.  It was just amazing.

I added those to my wishlist.  It appears that the second one isn't very popular.  Audible only has the first two books.

So, should I start with his Safehold series?

Probably either that one or the Honor Harrington series, but you can't go wrong with any of his stuff.  His War God series is straight fantasy, while most of the rest of it is military SF.

I like the "Honorverse" as many fans call it, but be warned: things scale up pretty quick. Some of the technology leaps are pretty impressive, even for sci-fi.

I'm okay with military Sci-Fi.  That's what the Old Man's War, Expeditionary Force, and you could make an argument, the Bobiverse books pretty much are.  And one of my favorites is Starship Troopers.  It still burns me up what Hollywood did to that book, along with Edgar Rice Burroughs Princess of Mars movie John Carter.

Re: The "Kitty Dump" - Watercooler - Trash it Here - Food For Thought - Or Whatever else floats your boat ;)

For old-time sci-fi, you're right about Asimov being good, along with most of Heinlein's stuff.  Glory Road was more adult oriented than his earlier work but was still pretty good, and you're right about him going off the rails with his later stuff.  Arthur C. Clarke was one of their contemporaries that was also good, though I generally prefer his short stories to his novels.

For modern adventure stuff I immediately grab anything new from John Sandford or Lee Child.

Elmer Kelton is far and away my favorite Western author, although Elmore Leonard wrote some back in the 1950's that's pretty good if you can find it.

And he's been dead for 30 years and some of his stuff is getting dated, but John D. MacDonald will always be one of my favorite authors.

Have you seen Starship Troopers with Rifftrax?

Starship Troopers | RiffTrax

For those not familiar with Rifftrax, it is the guys from MST3K "riffing" first run films - Can't recommend it enough!

And don't forget possibly the biggest movie sacrilege of all time:  adding in the Dwarf / Elf romance in "The Hobbit".

Re: The "Kitty Dump" - Watercooler - Trash it Here - Food For Thought - Or Whatever else floats your boat ;)

I'll have to check that out this weekend.  I was a big fan of MST3K years ago.  Every once in a while the word "Interocitor" gets thrown around up here from the movie.

I disagree that some books shouldn't be made into movies, at least in the case of Starship Troopers.  Take a look at Dune, both the David Lynch movie and the Sy-Fy remake were true to the story and both came out well.  If they can make Dune, they surely could've done Starship Troopers well.  I know, I know, just like Star Wars, Dune is fantasy.  But, you get my point.  Now that I think about it, Ender's Game came out pretty close to the book, too.  It just shows that if the author isn't around, HW will destroy it.

Matt Peneguy - If you can find it, I really like the full cast audio version of "Have Spacesuit will Travel". It's a Heinlein Juvenile (he wrote some books for adults and some for a younger audience). It's a lot of fun and one we've listened to as a family on road trips. It is classic 50's era sci-fi.

I second "The Three Body Problem". I listened to that and quite liked it.

"Ready Player One" is pretty good as an audiobook.

I have heard good things about the Expanse, but haven't gotten to it yet myself.

There are 2 more in the Three Body Series now.

There's Ray Bradbury, Martian Chronicals, Illustrated Man, Fahrenheit 451

Phillip K Dick, Michael Crichton, Kurt Vonnegut. H. P Lovecraft, Mary Shelley...

So many and so little time.

"Ready Player One" is a good one if you grew up in the 80s for the nostalgia alone.  Hopefully they do a good job with the movie.

I'll have to check out this "The Three Body Problem", it's got 2 recommendations already.

SHOOT that sounds impressive....I went with a 10 x 10 dog kennel from Tractor Supply with a tarp roof and then added some bird netting around the top...

I got around to building a water system that uses these cups hooked up to a 5 gal bucket that I hung off a bracket that I added to the kennel.  Sure made watering easier.  I got really creative on the brooding pen I made and put a toilet float valve in the bucket and hooked it up to a water hose so there was no need to worry about watering.

Re: The "Kitty Dump" - Watercooler - Trash it Here - Food For Thought - Or Whatever else floats your boat ;)

I don't like those cup type ones.  They get filled with crud.

I hooked a hose to one of these:

Ran it to a bucket with one of these float valve thingies:

And I've got a couple of these on the sides at the bottom of the bucket:

I set the timer to run 5 minutes every day.  If the bucket needs more water, it fills automatically...

Oh, yeah, this was my wife's brilliant idea, PUT A COPPER FITTING IN THE BUCKET.  It keeps algae and crud from forming.  We had the water turning green until I did that.  Did I mention my wife is brilliant!
