How many times do you see a great thread get trashed or hijacked for various reasons and I'll take the "Stand" and say I'm the worst for doing that..  So when I'm acting stupid tell me to trash it here, get it?? Rants - Cheers - Pet Peeves - or your Aunt Lilly, bring it..  (More then likely the dumbest thread anybody started, but I tried to keep it stupid, stupid) - The Forum Moderators rules still apply, no obscene pics, raunchy language and personal attacks, those will be reported and deleted if not changed...

(edited 9/13/2017 - Added link Request for Forum Etiquette - Added another link 9/21/2017 Forum filtering )

To Quote the Great Rick Becker.....

"When a perfectly valid and good question is asked, the thread gets a lot of great answers and some more questions. Once the questions has been answered to each persons (this includes you and me) satisfaction, we no longer need or want the discussion to continue.
We get the emails notifying us that another (and another and another and another...) post has been made and we get frustrated with the time wasting and we get snarky.

The other thing that seems to happen all too often is a post gets hijacked. The discussion moves off of the initial topic (ONE and TWO...) into many sub topics. Sometimes this happens and the initial question hasn't been totally answered."

Another Great Quote from Dennis Dohogne

"Hey, SWX guys and gals, what if we used THIS post for some of our more fun or tangential comments so we keep the other posts with more serious discussions from getting distracted/off-topic (polluted)?"

How about this from BMX'rerer Todd Blacksher

- In an effort to keep the posts somewhat on topic, and make it easy to pick out the "good information," a couple of us thought it would be a good idea to put in a water cooler. Are you completely confused? It's simple, if there is a thread where we are all helping someone find a solution, and it makes you think of something semi-related, you can say "Head over to "The Kitty Dump"

We need a good quote from Kelef Man to get it started.....

Something I've always dreamed of, leave with a quad or motorcycle for I don't know how long with only a backpack and a tent and drive around the continent to explore new places.

I'm a really big fan of the outdoor. I love camping.

They're cleaning out the defunct machine shop next door to make room for another group to move in, and as they were sorting through stuff I saw an old book that was probably going to wind up in the trash.  "WELDING, THEORY AND APPLICATIONS", published by the War Board on June 3, 1943.  I saved it.

Dave Bear Many years ago at work in Connecticut I witnessed the same thing, they'd dig a tunnel in the ground, drag a caterpillar into it, and lay an egg. the caterpillar was food for the larvae. Quite fascinating.

Dave.

If that hornet is anything like what we refer to as dirt dobbers, yep.  They bring the caterpillar back to a tube of mud they created, lay an egg on it and seal up the tube.  I believe that when the caterpillar is stung it doesn't even kill it.  Kind of gruesome if you think about it.

But, if you've ever had to clean up dirt dobber nests, they have caterpillars in them a lot of the time and larvae at whatever level of development.

I swear I remember seeing caterpillars in the tubes.  But, wikipedia doesn't mention it.  They say they mostly eat spiders (hmm... never knew it was spelled "dauber".):

dirt daubers and them yellow jackets are good at getting spiders.  I have seen many a dauber nest in walls when I was doing bee removal.  Seems they would make holes that the bees would like to use to get into the walls.

Hi Matt,

Fascinating, yeah they do make little mud looking nests. If I ever find any on the camper trailer or 4X4 I usually give them a quick squirt of WD-40, works quicker than most bug sprays and you just can't be too careful in the outback.........

A couple friends were talking about bike camping, mostly about the new panniers/racks they just bought, and how much they could hold - I just pulled out my wallet and said "all my camping supplies fit in here"

I used to do a bit of camping, but as I get older I am quite fond of a hot shower and cushy mattress after spending all day outside.

Many years ago a lot of people were talking about the huge, cushy motor homes, and I had this thought:

By the time you figure the cost of a motor home, the cost of a small car (so you don't have to drive the big thing around when you stop), and the amount of fuel that is used - how would that compare to a sporty convertible and a bunch of nights in a hotel?

(I forgot to factor in storage/insurance/maintenance/etc.)

With all that said, I used to have a lot of fun bike camping, camping in my car, and even in my old pickup with a topper.

I was on your side of the argument oops I mean discussion.

Agreed, agreed, & agreed. Especially the good bath part..

Mode of transportation & lodging should be in harmony with what you hope to see & experience.

The best adventures, the ones I've enjoyed and remembered the most, typically involved some level of effort, uncertainty, and/or discomfort. Frequently it's good, sometimes less good. The other treks tend to fade from my own recollection much faster.

Same here, I did discuss with my wife the possibility of renting a motorhome when we retire and going around the country. We'll see. Jet's and hotels are so much better!

I too was an avid hiker when younger. I hiked a large portion of the Appalachain Trail in the Northeast. Winter camped on a mountain in New Hampshire, had to dig my way out of the tent, that was my last winter camping trip LOL

Jets and multiple properties that you own on different beaches would be great.  I had the crazy idea of buying a few acres and living up the mountain from the beach.  Grow a few chickens, goats, and pigs....eat fruit off the trees...and go fishing at least once a week if not more.  Everything would be in walking distance or heck just get a little scooter and buzz around to get stuff.

You are correct there, I very vividly remember many of my favorite "BMX adventures" from about 30 years ago.

It's usually a good sign when you can look back and wonder how you pulled it off, or how it is you are still alive.

(You mean a loaf of bread, a jar of peanut butter, a bag of oranges, and a couple things of gatorade powder is not enough to last 4 or 5 days? Blasphemy!)

David Matula If you're a reader at all, see if you can get an older, unabridged version of The Swiss Family Robinson, it's got to be about 750 pages, I read it 6 or 7 times many years ago, then I saw the movie, the book was way, way better, just let your imagination take you there...

I think that I got that book when it came out.  Problem I have is no one wants to go with me of any crazy adventures.  Guess they are scared that the old man will have to be carried out when it is much more likely that I would end up being the one carrying them out.  Guess that is why no one wants to go....

Even though I have already consumed enough Spaghetti-O's to last a lifetime, the "glitch" is that it requires a way to open the can, and the flavor is slightly "improved" when they are heated, so now we need a heat source.

(Plus, if we had Spaghetti-O's, I would want to add hot dogs, and there is another perishable item to pack!)

A butter knife was all we needed to prepare our "bountiful feast" on that road trip!

Nowadays it is "Is there anywhere around here that has been on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives?"

I too was an avid hiker when younger. I hiked a large portion of the Appalachain Trail in the Northeast. Winter camped on a mountain in New Hampshire, had to dig my way out of the tent, that was my last winter camping trip LOL

Did the same thing half way up Mt. Washington. Not really winter camping, it was in May but there was still quite a bit of snow. We were using my buddy's tent that time. About 1 am we hear all this thrashing outside the tent. I thought it was a damn bear. Turns out it was a Park Ranger looking for us because, being the foolish twenty-something's that we were, we had forgotten to tell the rangers we were staying overnight.

To say that he was slightly unhappy with us might be a bit of an understatement.

A Swiss Army Knife usually has a can opener. I've used mine dozens of times. You can also go to a surplus store and get one of those John Wayne folding can openers (P-38, IIRC). They're compact and can go on your key ring. There was an old Willy & Joe cartoon from WWII where one of them comes to the realization that his can opener (bayonet) fit on the end of his rifle. Whooda thunk it?!

That John Wayne can opener is the P38 mentioned above by David Matula.

I've carried a Swiss Army Knife since I was a Boy Scout. I had to buy a new one about a month ago.

I've carried a Swiss Army Knife (although I was never a Boy Scout) for about the last 25 years, and I also carry a Leatherman Micro that I got for working on a project for Shell back in the day. I may not use them every day, but it's nice to know they're there if I need them. Like Tom Lehrer said, "Be Prepared".

Sure it will get the job done but it's not the most convenient now is it?

Something similar to it came with our 101 food parcels rations back when I was in the army. The chocolate bar that was standard in those rations had more tensile strength then the can opener.

Threw all the improvements that they have tried to make on food for the troops.  One dish made for a sample is great when served and properly plated.  Then when the multiply the ingredients by a billion or so something goes wrong.  That and the packaging and the preparation instructions must have something to do with it.

Hardly ever had those rations because most of the time when we're in the field there was a field kitchen providing the meals.

The ration packs themselves weren't half bad. The chocolate (al though l I've seen concrete with a more pliable consistency) was actually pretty good, once you got it soft enough to chisel a piece off. If anything it created my liking for deep dark chocolate.

The old MRE's were awful, but the newer ones are pretty good. I do miss the dehydrated fruit, especially the strawberries. Break off a piece and pop it in your mouth, and you can feel all the fluid in your body get absorbed by the fruit. The jalapeno cheese spread in the MRE's is pretty good, too.

Dang it! I'm hungry now.

David, that is an unbelievable crazy coincidence you would mention the Texas Water Safari. Such a small world it is. Odd that my post started the adventure conversation and so quickly led to Texas Water Safari. Kind of full circle.

My friend Steve is the guy in all of those pics I posted (motorcycle & Grand Canyon pics, I was behind the camera)...

*1st place novice, 16th overall.  1997 TWS

He said they were hallucinating by the time they reached the gulf, lol... 49 hours 18 minutes of paddling!! Nuttzzz!

I didn't know Steve back in 1997 but if I had I would have been all in! While he was doing this I was racing hare scrambles.

And oh...50 miles? Ummm, actually it's 260 miles, haha...your previous post sounds like one of my friends trying to sucker me into signing up for an event.."oh come ONNNN, it'll be a walk in the park!". Haha..

Seriously though, are you considering making a run at the Texas Water Safari?

This group was founded in anticipation of the release of Solidworks. They met for 25 years to discuss what was to come. Of course by the time Solidworks was released in 1995, they were all dedicated AutoCAD users and refused to switch to that new fangled 3D stuff.

We have Armed Forces Day/Week...

Many Americans celebrate Armed Forces Day annually on the third Saturday of May. It is a day to pay tribute to men and women who serve the United States’ armed forces. Armed Forces Day is also part of Armed Forces Week, which begins on the second Saturday of May.

We have Veterans Day...

Veterans Day is an official United States public holiday, observed annually on November 11, that honors military veterans; that is, persons who served in the United States Armed Forces.

We have Memorial Day...

Memorial Day or Decoration Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces.[1] The holiday, which is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May.

I think it is most appropriate and correct to honor the three distinctly different groups of Military Personal as we do.
