How many times do you see a great thread get trashed or hijacked for various reasons and I'll take the "Stand" and say I'm the worst for doing that..  So when I'm acting stupid tell me to trash it here, get it?? Rants - Cheers - Pet Peeves - or your Aunt Lilly, bring it..  (More then likely the dumbest thread anybody started, but I tried to keep it stupid, stupid) - The Forum Moderators rules still apply, no obscene pics, raunchy language and personal attacks, those will be reported and deleted if not changed...

(edited 9/13/2017 - Added link Request for Forum Etiquette - Added another link 9/21/2017 Forum filtering )

To Quote the Great Rick Becker.....

"When a perfectly valid and good question is asked, the thread gets a lot of great answers and some more questions. Once the questions has been answered to each persons (this includes you and me) satisfaction, we no longer need or want the discussion to continue.
We get the emails notifying us that another (and another and another and another...) post has been made and we get frustrated with the time wasting and we get snarky.

The other thing that seems to happen all too often is a post gets hijacked. The discussion moves off of the initial topic (ONE and TWO...) into many sub topics. Sometimes this happens and the initial question hasn't been totally answered."

Another Great Quote from Dennis Dohogne

"Hey, SWX guys and gals, what if we used THIS post for some of our more fun or tangential comments so we keep the other posts with more serious discussions from getting distracted/off-topic (polluted)?"

How about this from BMX'rerer Todd Blacksher

- In an effort to keep the posts somewhat on topic, and make it easy to pick out the "good information," a couple of us thought it would be a good idea to put in a water cooler. Are you completely confused? It's simple, if there is a thread where we are all helping someone find a solution, and it makes you think of something semi-related, you can say "Head over to "The Kitty Dump"

We need a good quote from Kelef Man to get it started.....

and, just like that... all the IDEAS we voted on are gone from the forums... so we cannot see them... as if they didn't exist.

Did any one happen to get the latest tally on what ideas were the top ten before SW took them away?

So, I went over to discuss it with our guardrail guy (I work for the Louisiana DOTD) and he pulled up some drawings he just received from TX transportation research group, and low and behold they're SW drawings (I'm sure Glenn Schroeder was involved). From the discussion the new standard may be able to prevent some of this in the future.

Speaking of guardrails and tankers, I was reminded of this incident here in Baltimore not long back . . .

Over on the error message thread There is discussion about MBD replacing drawings. i would love to see it. However, everywhere I go management is afraid to even consider computers in the shop because of the dirty environment. How do companies deal with computers and dirt? And don't suggest keeping the place clean, birds can fly into our shop and a calm day in Kansas is when the wind is only 15 mph.

there have been protective covers for computers for years.  key boards with plastic covers to special boxes that filter out the dirt.  the best thing to look for is something like what you may find on a cnc plasma cutter that is made for being in an environment like that.  touch screen keyboard and all.

Re: The "Kitty Dump" - Watercooler - Trash it Here - SWW TOP TEN IDEAS - Don't Forget to VOTE

Management is right, to a point. Consider the PC/tablet a consumable tool. When a grinder needs a new wheel, you replace it. Before you run out of wheels, you buy more. Now a PC is not as inexpensive as a grinding wheel or a band saw blade, but it's a difference in conception about value added to worker efficiency by using a tool. Tools wear out. Workers keep working with more tools that you get them. Management keeps spares ready to deploy on the shelf just like other consumables.

Practically though, you asked how.

You can use canned air to blow out the a PC of dust daily or at the end of a shift.

You can buy case mod fans to increase the air flow. I tried out a front facing drive bay fan. It took customization in the case I had so I'd avoid that.

You can buy magnetically adhered fine screen mesh filters which just slap onto the circular case fans. I'd specify a case which accepts this easily, so it doesn't have a side panel vent grill in rectangular orientation.

You can also try a different form factor: Rugged for laptops / tablets, but those are far more expensive. I'd prefer expendible.

Another form factor worth examining is a puck PC. You can get one with no moving parts. SSD's do cost more, it's a trade-off. It'll still need blown out weekly.

Overall, it depends on whether your design data can be shown on lesser expendible hardware. Machinists aren't designers, so they should not get workstations. You can't under-provision it either so that it's less helpful than just paper.

Edit: it'll also screw with your accountant, to treat some PCs as disposables and others as capitol investments. It's written off very differently.

Jim,

I've been to more and more places in the last year or two that are using cheap tablets to access eDrawings, 3D and regular pdfs, avi files and other documents.  These are touch screen, very durable and low cost.  Usually they are mounted on a gooseneck so they are secure yet adaptable to the needs of the crew.

And with your IT... Our IT people would lose their mind if I gave them your scenario.

But, I think you have a very good point.  I went to a fab shop a while back and they had a box that was filled by a distributor containing things like gloves, ear plugs, drill bits, etc. the obvious consumables.  As I read your post, I was thinking, they'd just have PC components in there alongside the other consumables.  It could happen.  The times are changing.

Re: The "Kitty Dump" - Watercooler - Trash it Here - SWW TOP TEN IDEAS - Don't Forget to VOTE

We are in the process of moving to this. We don't plan on removing entirely drawings but the objective is to have a screen to be able to view what it looks like. Some welders have a harder time reading 2D drawings and sometimes a 3D view does all the difference.

As I said, our plan isn't to get rid of the drawings. Our plan is more or so to have something that assists the drawing and that can be moved around the shop without problem

Also, it's easy to zoom on a PDF loaded on a tablet, not so much on a printed piece of paper.

Re: The "Kitty Dump" - Watercooler - Trash it Here - SWW TOP TEN IDEAS - Don't Forget to VOTE

You're right Matt Peneguy. Both management and IT just love it when you tell them that all they need to do is abandon their obsolete expectations and drive forward with new thoughts. Management especially loves new thoughts (sorry, biting scarcasm there).

But specifically to IT, remind them of two things they should already know:

FRU components are Field Replaceable Units. So replace them.

Disk imaging an air-gapped system that doesn't need updated is fast and simple. Party like it's 1999 for all that it matters. Just make sure that your form factor has a USB or SD port (preferably with dust cover) for sneaker-net. Connectivity is for consumers.

Alex Lachance  I once worked in a shop where we built both small and large electrical controllers for naval shipboard use-think 30 Amps to 3,000 Amps+! Our assemblers used 32" HP all in one PC's with eDrawings installed and they loved being able to section and hide things, I think it definitely helped their productivity, after training, I was rarely called to the shop. The plan was to begin the same thing in the welding, forming, and machining areas to eventually go MBD, not sure if that ever happened.

It wasn't cheap, but it saved a lot of time.

must be the 14th of feb.  Big day tomorrow. That is when me and the little lady go buy some junk from the stores and celebrate St. Valentines Day.  Started doing this when we were broke cause you can save 50% to 70%  off on stuff.  I was in trouble the first year that I started doing this.  I took the same amount she spent on getting me something and then came back with more junk than she thought she would have gotten.  also the places to go out to eat are less crowded.

I had dinner plans tonight, but then wife found out she got scheduled for this evening. It's our 1st VDay as newlyweds. I have a special gift for her, a gold-dipped rose from a local jeweler, whereas for the past 8 years we did practically nothing for this 'Hallmark Holiday'. She's gonna transmit our displeasure to her new manager that scheduled it.

At least I have no reservations. Tomorrow will work just as well for us. I like the post-holiday tradition you have David Matula. We usually do the same thing for easter and halloween candy.

Looks like I am going to have to learn some more stuff on my own to pass my next cert ( CSWP), I used the CSWA training prep course and I got a perfect score. I knew most of topics in the cswa but I would at least like to see what the videos have to offer for the cswp.CSWP.png

Best prep ever is using the heck out of the software.  Figure out how to do different things different ways.  Make all the mistakes that you can and learn what the errors look like.  A lot of the written exam when I took it was about what all the little symbols on the tree mean and some other stuff that I do not recall.  Then when you see something new forget about going to lunch the next day....stay at the keyboard and try to reproduce the result.  That or stay after hours.  Take advantage of every learning opportunity out there...id drive 2 hours for a 30 min training class if I thought it would save me some frustration with the program and make the job easier....

I actually learned some new things from the exam( and being that it is from a exam I wont say exactly what) they were not in the prep course either. There is something very unsettling about learning new Soildworks functions from a exam. I also learned some new things from the prep course but that was expected. I just want the same type of course for the cswp since it went well using the cswa prep. What really helped was after I would take a course I would find projects and apply the course subject to those items. I put in 9-10 hours a day on solidworks and my other CAD programs so that part of it is there too.

I also learn well from others, a lot of what I know now is due to one of my co-workers from a previous job. He would help me out with any questions or even stop what he was doing if I asked about his project or needed help with mine. I should see if he wants to meet up and have cad wars for money, who can model this fastest lol

We are going through this series in our small group right now.  We are loving it:

Keys to Loving Relationships DVD Series – Smalley Institute

Order it and watch it and apply it and she will have a nice surprise when she gets home.

Just a suggestion.

The family has plans a birthday party tomorrow and some other party on Sunday.  All I want to do right now is to park myself next to my six pack and watch the weekend slip by.  Supposed to be cold wet and rainy.  Good time to hibernate in the house and keep out of trouble.

Re: The "Kitty Dump" - Watercooler - Trash it Here - Food For Thought - Or Whatever else floats your boat ;)

Sorry, I gotta rant somewhere,

Shop Supervisor just came in all fired up. An Engineer who recently has left for another job had recently redesigned a conveyor There had been a strap on one end holding down the plastic liner on the conveyor pan, that strap was replaced with fender washers on bolt heads on the new design.

Nobody told the assembly foreman that we were no longer using the strap and he spent time looking for it.

Was it on the drawing?

No but they usually don't have the drawings over there. Nobody told him it wasn't used.

Was it in the BOM for the shop order?

No, but nobody told him that it wasn't used. Furthermore the print for the strap is wrong and needs fixed. The mounting holes in the strap don't work. There is a reference note that states the bolts are 8-3/4" apart typ. and then the holes are also dimensioned from the left side of the strap. The third hole is not dimensioned right, see? It's not at an equal distance apart!

Lets see the print.  The dimensions here appear to be evenly spaced.

But they aren't. See. I punched this strap for them myself and the third hole is not right. See my tape shows it isn't an even distance apart! Wait that isn't the same dimension on the print, it must be from the other side. Welllll it doesn't match the print here either...... guess maybe I punched it wrong. And if we aren't going to use the strap maybe it doesn't matter. But all these changes are going to have to stop. My guys have no idea how to weld things up from one run to the next if nobody goes out and tells them about the changes!

Don't you get the revised prints and the ECNs I e-mail you when we make a change? .............

// rant mode off

Le Sigh........

I feel your pain.

Typical exchange between (M)achinist and (E)ngineer:

M, The program is wrong, the part isn't machined correctly!

E, Did you read the setup sheet? Is the program zero set correctly?

M, Of course I did. The zero is in the upper left of the part!

E, No, the zero is on the part center line.

M, Well it shouldn't be there! It should be in the upper left of the part. That's how I would've programmed it!

E, It doesn't really matter how you would have programmed it, it only matters how I programmed it. The zero point is specified on the setup sheet.

M, So you're trying to say that I'm too stupid to program this part?

E, Le Sigh......

I have been there before, I say here have a seat and program this part while I go do your job at the cnc mill and no I do not need a pass down even if I did not program that specific part.

Re: The "Kitty Dump" - Watercooler - Trash it Here - Food For Thought - Or Whatever else floats your boat ;)

I am glad that I don't have many days like that. I used to.....way back when I worked in a fab shop.  guys grab 2 of the same parts..to weld together and they don't fit.  must be the program cause humans don't make errors....have the guy fix the program that has been working for months now.

Save the Kitty Litter (Google) and Search with dogpile.com - the best search engine in town....
