How to align sketch shapes?

SW 16-17 Student Edition

Beginner.

Example. I have two rectangles and a circle of different sizes. I want to align the smaller rectangle inside the center bottom of the bigger one. Combine them so they become a single sketch so that when I move them around, they stay as one piece. And the circle in the center top. I've found the align toolbar, but it's always greyed out when I select the sketches and shapes.

If the feature is simply unavailable, is there a method I can use to sketch multiple shapes symmetrically?

This was my plan of action

X plane (front)

Large rectangle

Medium rectangle aligned to center bottom of larger

     fillet corners and cutout

Small rectangle aligned to center top. cut out

protrude etc. .

I can do it the brute force way and just draw each individual line, but it's too time consuming :/

Re: How to align sketch shapes?

You need to be in sketch edit mode and need to use relations/dimensions to align them as needed.

Re: How to align sketch shapes?

Hi Anas,

In the first rectangle sketch, add a diagonal construction line from corner to corner. In the second do the same. Right click the line and 'Select Midpoint' hold Shift and select the diagonal line in the first sketch, add a midpoint relation. Now the second is fixed to the centre of the first.

Re: How to align sketch shapes?

Why not simply use this rectangle option

Re: How to align sketch shapes?

While in the sketch, you can use...

  • Mirror
  • Move/Copy
  • Linear Sketch pattern
  • Circular Sketch pattern
  • Draw and place construction lines and use Symmetric relations
  • Make your shapes blocks
  • Draw/dimension/relations each rectangle separately Align one with the origin (dimensions or relations) then align subsequent shapes using dimensions and/or relations.

That'd be my preferred method, but I don'r know where they're at in the model and didn't want to suggest deleting and adding new sketch entities.

Re: How to align sketch shapes?

As for the plan, you should be able to achieve that form in 4 features. Extrude, Extrude Cut through, extrude cut though, extrude cut blind.

PS, have you done any of the tutorials yet?

And just three sketches.
