What do people mean when they talk about "CAD-embedded simulation?"
For the last few decades, we have seen more and more simulation tools integrated in CAD systems. This positive trend made simulation accessible to all product engineers. However, I believe it is important to understand what “CAD-embedded simulation” really means, as this term might have been over-used.First of all, these simulation tools (FEA, CFD, Electromagnetics) share the same user interface as the CAD software. This is the bare minimum, but in my opinion, it is not enough to consider them CAD-embe…

Multibody Part vs. Assembly in SOLIDWORKS
There are fewer differences than ever between a multibody part file and an assembly file in SOLIDWORKS.Where commonalities exist, the user may take advantage of performance and file management benefits of a multibody part.Where they differ, each has individual benefits that make them a clear choice in each situationWhy AssembliesThis assembly contains 19 parts, some unique, some with multiple instances. As an assembly, this results in several files that need to be managed. 1 for the assembly and 1 each for the uniq…

What if Leonardo da Vinci had SOLIDWORKS?
To celebrate Leonardo da Vinci's birthday today (April 15th), I felt a blog post was appropriate. He would have turned 562 today. We commonly wonder (at least I do) "what if" significant figures in history were alive today, and how amazed they would be with the technological advances we have. So I wonder what the great mind of Leonardo da Vinci would think about the automobile, the airplane, the computer, etc. But, what if we look at it another way; what if instead of Leonardo living today, he had SolidWorks back…

Installing the Toolbox the correct way
A choice you will need to make with regard to installing the toolbox is:Should I install it on the local machine?OrShould I install it on the server? This decision will ultimately be based on whether you are working in a multi user environment or not.If you are working in a multi user environment, then I would certainly recommend installing toolbox on the server. The toolbox is customizable – part numbers, descriptions, materials can be applied to the individual fixings within the toolbox. So it makes sense t…

How To Use Shell Meshing For Thermal Studies
I could make this blog post real short: For convection, double "h"; for radiation, double "f" (or avoid the surface-to-ambient option); and for conduction layers, use Solid meshing.Instead, how about a little explanation?SOLIDWORKS Simulation gives you the ability to assign thermal loads and boundary conditions to your models and predict resultant temperatures. As any good engineer knows, there are 3 modes of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation. As any good Simulation user knows, there are two way…

Marketing vs. Engineering: 5 Rules For Peaceful Coexistence
It may seem like a cliché, but in many companies around the world, Marketing and Engineering often don't see eye to eye. Whether it's a marketer taking offense because Engineering says a potentially world-changing new product idea can't be produced and sold for less than a small fortune, or Engineering accusing Marketing of exaggerating the technical capabilities of a new design, we've all been on one side of the divide at some point. Can the relationship between Marketing and Engineering be constructive? You'd be hard-pressed to walk into any space full of creative people and not see, hear, or feel the power of innovative thinking. While the notion of "innovation" can be applied to everything from food science development to urban expansion, the term seems to pop up most frequently in the world of product design and its various sub-industries. But what makes an end-user feel like a product is "innovative," and most importantly, how did the product get there? To understand what makes something innovative is to see …

Concept Before CAD Episode 2: Designing a Better Whiteboard
Concept Before CAD is all about what designers and engineers do before they begin detailed CAD design. We've been learning from our customers about the tasks they perform and the tools they use for conceptual design. It turns out there are some challenges common to that process. Here's what you told us:About 31% of design time is spent in the conceptual phase-BEFORE detailed design is done in SOLIDWORKS.Many stakeholders may need to provide input; however, collaboration is difficult.Traditional CAD and PDM tool…

Do I Really Need Analysis Software?
Do I really need analysis software? It's a valid question, and one I hear from customers on occasion. Being a designer myself, I feel that I have a good head for figuring out if a design can be easily manufactured, and also if it’s strong enough. I suspect that most design engineers also have a good sense for these two keys to designing a product. So why would I need analysis tools when I already know if a design will work or not?A related question I hear from customers is “how long does it take to va…

Best Start-Up Practices for SolidWorks Newbies
You were ecstatic when the company approved the purchase of SolidWorks and training for your staff. In no time, you had the software, the manpower and the skills. Then, one day, you realized your team wasn't delivering as expected. You were in hot water. You didn't know what hit you.Sound familiar? That usually happens when you start out with SolidWorks without a proper checklist of things you should have or do. Now, we could not blame you. That checklist isn't in the manual, we admit. Yeah, we provide the software…

When using smart dimension in a drawing of a part the dimension values in the drawing arent the same as in the part.  i.e fully defined sketch dimension as part of a part has a value of 100mm, but this same dimension when using the smart dimension in the drawing gives a value of 3.98. This value changes as the part sketch is edited but never is the right value. This is occuring with all drawings of different parts. This has only started to occur after uninstalling and re-installing the solidworks softwar…
