9 Things You Can't Do with 2D CAD
We get it. You're quite comfortable with your 2D design tools. Over the years, you've become very proficient with these tools, so why transition to 3D CAD tools and deal with a potentially long learning curve and resulting downtime required to become as productive on a whole new set of tools? After all, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," right? The reality, however, is that you could be doing things better, faster, and in the long run, cheaper than you could ever do with your 2D design tools. By sticking with 2D …

What do people mean when they talk about "CAD-embedded simulation?"
For the last few decades, we have seen more and more simulation tools integrated in CAD systems. This positive trend made simulation accessible to all product engineers. However, I believe it is important to understand what “CAD-embedded simulation” really means, as this term might have been over-used.First of all, these simulation tools (FEA, CFD, Electromagnetics) share the same user interface as the CAD software. This is the bare minimum, but in my opinion, it is not enough to consider them CAD-embe…

What if Leonardo da Vinci had SOLIDWORKS?
To celebrate Leonardo da Vinci's birthday today (April 15th), I felt a blog post was appropriate. Robots are in Boston this Weekend at Northeastern University
Robots are in Boston this weekend competing at the Northeastern University New England FIRST District Qualifying Event. I got a chance to talk to mentor, Brandon Holley about this NE FRC Regional Event. For years, Brandon has been the organizer of the Beantown Blitz, an after FIRST robot season event, that SolidWorks loves.According to Brandon, in the heart of FRC season, Northeastern’s Matthews arena, the oldest hockey rink in the world, will open its doors to the public and to energized FRC teams from N…

Don't pay thousands to upgrade your 2D CAD software
On April 8,2014, Microsoft will end support for their Microsoft XP operating system. According to their website: If you continue to use Windows XP after support ends, your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. If you are running an older version of a 2D CAD product on the XP operating system, you may have to pay a significant amount to upgrade the product to work with newer versions of Windows. This could cost your business tens of thousands of dollars–…

SolidWorks CAD Certification - A Final Exam Provides a Life-Long Crede…
In a tough job market, CAD certification is becoming a required credential for that first interview. The Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) exam tests a designer’s knowledge in the fundamentals of engineering design using SolidWorks. The CSWA exam is the first of eleven SolidWorks certification exams designers take for life-long learning.SolidWorks provides qualified schools the ability to give the CSWA exam to their students. The school becomes a SolidWorks Certified Academic Provider. Next month,…

Imported Files - Turning Surfaces into Solids in SolidWorks
Problem - Many times when you import a customer's part or assembly and it opens as a part that has a ton of surfaces or it may open as a multi level assembly and each of those parts is made up of surfaces. The file that I chose to work with was an assembly that when imported into SolidWorks opened as a part file by setting some of the import options. The Feature Stats for this part show how the rebuild time is effected by having to look at all 697 surfaces.Files like this can pose several problems as you start to…

I'm looking for step by step instructions on how to set-up and run an Analysis of a steel ball free-falling and impacting a glass window plate. I understand that this is not a drop test, rather an impact analysis; where a ball of a specific size and mass falls via gravity at a specific distance from the window, impacts the glass window. Where the result is the stress induced on the window; from which I can determine if the glass fails.I've read older discussions (i.e.Sep 30, 2013 11:40 AM by Jared Conway); but the…

Salutations and thanks in advance fellow Solidworkers. Hopefully a simple question here, but a search including these forums and the googles yielded fruitless results. I would like to show a center mark for an arc that is dimensioned in a detail view. However, the radius is large enough such that its center falls outside of the circular sketch that defines the detail view. Can I make this center mark appear in the detail view without it residing inside the detail's sketch boundary? Much appreciated …

Hi,I'm using the SW API to write annotations in 3D parts. I'm facing some isues regarding the position and the display of the created annotations.
